37g Build

a question I've been meaning to ask for sometime now...how do you power your PC fans in the hoods? Like do you hook into a ballast? Re-wire for a plug or what?

Anyways, the pix you do have posted look great!

It would depend on what kind of current they require. If it's just a simple 120v fan, then all you'd need to do is wire it to a plug and away you go. If it ran on something other than 120v, you'd need to find a way to put the converter somewhere along the way...

Tell your wife to hurry with the stain, I want to see water in that tank!

I'm an avid wood worker (hobby) and if you're working with "learn as you go" you've done an "AWESOME" job so far....keep up the good work and you'll have something to be really proud of.

I bought a cheap ac adapter with 4 settings, and cut the plug off/wired to the fan.

Same here. I run two 4 1/2" fans off of mine. I had a used power adapter in my pieces and parts junk drawer of things I can never bring myself to throw away.

I have the garage so I guess that is like one big drawer...

Still working

Still working

Everything has 2 coats of stain. The interior has been primed.
Next up, interior painting, exterior poly, then on to plumbing and wiring.

Interior painted.
First coat of spar varnish going on today.
It's starting to get exciting, the PITA phase of the project is almost over.

Installed T5 lighting (4x24watt retro from reefgeek), it looks plenty bright.
(That's with the reflector film not removed yet).

Next up is the fan and moonlight, then on to some plumbing.

Well I have a chalk basslet that needs a home, so I'll probably work around that.
Always wanted a jawfish, but that means deep substrate.
Too small a tank for a tang, so maybe a blennie.
A dwarf angel might be perfect, but they're so hit or miss reef safety.
Definitely a shrimp, not sure banded coral or blood.
Soo many choices, so little volume.

that is why i upgraded to the 75 to little volume in nanos. but i have a flame angel that never even looks to snip at my coral. IMO the best lookin dwarf there is but the price refects that at near 75.00 bucks. any prefrence to coral sps, lps, softies.

Sadly, I found the chalk basslet anchovied on the floor sunday morning. Very strange, he's been in that tank for almost 4 yrs.
On the plus side, I can plan the stocking for the 37 from scratch.

So many little things to finish. All the staining and varnishing is done, the hood is completely finished unless I add another fan.

On to plumbing: As you may recall, the return pump is a mag 9.5, which will run thru an OM squirt 4 way. The tank has 2 holes drilled for drain to sump. Sump is a 10 gallon. Recirc skimmer will be outside the sump. I'd like to squeeze a small refugium beside or above the main sump.
I need to decide to feed the skimmer with gravity flow from part of a drain line, or T off the main feed pump.
I'm a little concerned that the rotating OM will result in changing backpressure on the pump, and therefore surging in the flow to the skimmer if I T off the Mag.
I've done gravity feed before, its pretty consistent, but not a lot of pressure, there's a chance the gravity might not be enough flow thru the skimmer...

Why not go with a 15 gal. sump, since it should fit anywhere a 10 does. I don't know what kind of room you have in the stand, but I'd definitely add more volume. A 10 would leave very little room for error as far as top of and extra space in case of a power outage.

I agree, I wanted more sump, but a custom acrylic sump isnt in the budget.
I don't have 24" inside the stand for a 20g, so it would have to be a tall.
Hmm. Wonder if I can raise the skimmer so the output makes it over the edge of a 15 tall, but still be able to get the collection cup off.
I'll have to give that a serious look tonight.
