Looks so much better than the day we hauled that baby inside!!!!

Well done, that is the tank I I dream about putting in the wall between my office and my dining room. Well done!

Thanks Bryan.
Again, I appreciate all your help moving the tank.

Keep the posts/pictures coming on your new project.

I love those puffers. I had one a while back and he nipped at a lot of the corals.
If only there was a way to ensure that a fish was reef safe.
Tank looks great.

When I first saw him at the LFS, I was concerned about him and corals and after discussing it with them, they warned me that he really likes snails, especially as he gets older, but that corals shouldn't be an issue.

So far he's been a great fish. He seems to have a really good personality and responds well to feeding and is social with the other fish. He also swims pretty well despite not having great fins for swimming. He moves what he has so rapidly that he reminds me of a hummingbird that is hovering in flight.

Since I got him about 12 weeks ago, I've not seen any agressive behavior or any coral picking for that matter.

Oddly, today; I saw him harassing a small snail on the sandbed. He was lightly tapping on it like a bird would with its beek on a worm.

I predict that he will continue to pick on the snails as he increases in size.

noobyReefer-- Thank you.

Goodwin9-- Thank you.
I sure hope so, given all the work, money, and time I've put in to it.

reefkoi-- Thank you. I decided to use the "cup" measurement to throw people off. There's so many grand reef tanks here and I figured a funny topic might spice things up a bit.

I could have used teaspoons. :)

I spent a considerable amount of time working out the electrical paths for the system, but the plumbing took the most time.

I wanted both the electronics and plumbing to be very serviceable and provide for all situations.

The Nepture controller and its associated devices are simply amazing for everything they do and it really is an excellent automation device. I don't know how I'd do everything without it. I can't recommend it more highly as one of the best things I've purchased for the tank. If anyone is on the fence about buying one, let me know if you have any questions.

Given that, I still have some more electrical wiring organization to do. I might even get to it this weekend.

I see you didn't drill for a closed loop any reason why.I am looking to do the same tank size except mine will be 96x30x24.I am still waiting for a price quote from a local tank builder.I was going to get a 10 ft x 24 x 24 but its a tank made in china and there is no warrenty so I decided against it.The tank was $2000 wich wasn't to pricy for a 400 gal tank but no warrenty on a tank of that size if it leaks or cracks it will cause more damage than its worth.

Since I have the 2 Tunze 6100s and the Wavebox in addition to my 2 Eheim 1262 returns, I decided that I had plenty of flow and that I would give it a try without buying either more powerheads or considering a closed loop. I nearly bought 4 6100s.

In the end, that was a great decision, as I have an absolute ton of flow. The two 6100s are set to 40% max and they move the entire tank around and in conjunction with the Wavebox and returns. I'm actually having a tough time finding locations for "low-flow preferring" corals in the tank.

Is your tank glass or acrylic?

If you are looking for acrylic, you should really consider Chris at Midwest Customs. He's not too far from you in Minnesota, just on the other side of the border and lakes.

You should discuss with him freighting to Canada, I'm sure he gets requests all the time.

Beautiful Tank.....aren't you glad you finally posted it ;) When can I come see it in person?

Yes, I'm glad I posted it.
I guess the photography is my weakest trait, I have a hard time with it. Maybe I should just have Josh come over and do all the photography.

Let me know next time you're up to see Josh, and we'll arrange a time for you guys to come over and check it out.

Give me some advanced notice, so I have time to Magfloat it for you.

what brand of bulbs are you using?

The blubs are singled-ended Hamilton 14K, 400W.
About $90 each.

More pictures for your viewing pleasure.

Just think how pretty these would be, if I really knew how to use a camera.

Do you have any pics of the how you set up the Ehiems?
How do you like the 1262's?
Did you hard plumb the pumps?
Thanks
Doug

Yes, I do have a photo. (Excuse the messy sump)

returnpumps.jpg

Return Pumps

I used braided tubing, I think its vinyl 1-1/2". It was great to work with and there's no pump vibration.

I used the check valves you see there and then into a Union/ball valve for service. The tubing attaches to the bulkhead via a hose barb.

The returns go up thru the overflows across the top and down as shown in my lighting photo.

The Eheims 1262 are as close to a perfect pump as you could get IMO. They are very quiet, were really easy to plumb and produce enough flow for the job at hand.

This is the same size tank I am putting in. How tall is your canopy and how tall is the stand?

Hi there,

The stand is 34" high.

The canopy is 27" high total.
The top "false-wall" is 7" high (where the lighting ballasts sit).
The rest is the vertical distance is from the lighting fixtures, wood trim, and tank overhang to prevent viewing of the waterline.

You have a massive DSB! Insanely awesome thread though

Thanks.

Thanks for the response.I had looked into buying a tank from Glass cages.96x30x24 $1065 for the tank with overflows and drilled for closed loop.It costs another $670 to ship it but they can't ship it to my house they have to ship it to a company that has a loading dock and a forklift.I was going to ship it to my plumbing supplier. But then he has to put it in his truck and bring it to my house where I need another 6 guys to lift the tank.I don't know yet if I want to impose on them yet.The guy here in Montreal will build the tank and deliver it.I have to see what he is going to charge me.We have been playing phone tag.I also was worried that what if the tank is damaged or something goes wrong in the first 3 to 8 months. How do I return it?Tank will be made of glass.Probably weigh about 500 pounds. Its going to be a pain to lift. The guy here can even build it in my house wich in one way isn't bad.I could get a larger tank or wider and have him put it together in my basement. He told me he did that for several of his customers.I have about 4 seio powerheads 8 mj some hagen and a few others.I wanted a closed lop because I wanted a nice clean look to the tank.My old 150 had 7 powerheads and a seaswirl. It takes away from the look of the tank.I do think that 2 tunze will do the job. They are nice powerheads but I wanted to avoid placincing them in the tank.I was thinking a closed loop with the wave box.Maybe I would buy 2 tunze nano streams.I don't think they are strong enough for a sps tank

I don't think the Nano Streams would be powerful enough for a 300g either. Tunze makes an excellent product, but I think you need more power than nanos.

I can understand your feelings about a closed loop looking nicer, but to gain any flexibility you have to add a bunch of lockline or some other adpater to adjust the flow, and IMO that looks just as bad or worse than a Tunze Stream in the water. Still, there's about 12 dozen ways to disguise it.

I know alot of people use lockline here, but I just don't like the way it looks; it's kind of alien looking to me. If you don't mind the wave boxes, you could do 2 or 3 or those and forget the rest. My one wavebox produces a considerable amount of water movement.

Congrats Eric, it looks fabulous.

My corals and clam seem very happy. I'm going to want a frag of that clam soon. J/k.

I think that your puffer isn't a puffer. I don't know if the guy charged you for a valentini puffer, but it looks more like a saddled (mimic) filefish, which is what I have.

Josh

Josh,

After studying my fish more last night and seeing him harass my snails, as well as how he curls his tail (almost 90 degrees) most of the time, I have to continue to think that he is a puffer.

He looks very different from the photo of your filefish, though the similarities are striking, there's still significant tail fin and other color pattern differences from my fish.

Can you post a picture of your fish from the front so we can see how thick or thin it is? (Like taking the picture of the front bumper of a car). I wonder if this is not a distinguishing factor between puffers and filefish.

My puffer is thick, thicker looking than most of a my other fish proportionately. He doesn't have a "thin" profile like the others.
How about your fish?

WOW...your tank looks amazing....

I live in OC too and would definately love it sometime to check out your tank....right now I am currently setting up a brand new 240 that replaced our 300 acrylic...

Nice work!

Notice how he doesn't have the blue stripes running along his body like the Valentini does.

The mimc filefish and valentini puffer look the same except for the blue lines. "Mimic" means he mimcs a puffer. He should look boxy, (if well fed). The only difference should be the blue lines. At least that's what I've gathered from the photography.

But I'm no expert.

Cheers
Josh

It's really tough to say. I just took some more photos.

As you can see he has some girth, but maybe because he's so small overall, it's hard to tell. I wonder if in 1 year it will be easier to determine.

I wanted to get those powercords out of the water. The reason being in my old tank my wife hated the look.I am going to use the pond foam on the back of the tank to hide everything.I am also going to hide the closed loop returns with the pond foam and bare rock.I want to make everything look like its part of the tank.I will also be covering the overflow.the wave boxe will be visible but not all of it.Some will be hidden by the overflow.Thats my plan.I do like the tunze streams I was worried about drilling the tank due to leaking in the future. The tank builder will make the tank out of 3/4 inch glass. He assured me it will be strong
