40 Gallon Sump config

I found a deal on CL for a 6 month old 75 Gallon DT with a 40 Gallon sump. The previous owner had it setup for fresh water. My question is if the sump will work for salt water. The baffles come up very close to the top of the 40 Gallon (see pictures). Does the height matter for a sump?

I looked at it again tonight and the panes of glass come up to the bottom of the trim. That seems high to me after seeing all the other sumps here online. any advice would be appreciated.

I would also like to add that the images attached above are of the bottom of thank.

Can you take the pictures so that you can see the whole thing? You can make out the bottoms of the separators but not the tops. Looks like there's a few more than necessary at first glance.
There was another reefer on here who posted beautiful specs for a 29gallon sump build, if you follow that and modify for the 15x18 of the 40 you'd be set.

fishy, thanks for the reply. pictures are attached. The baffles are already silicone, If they wont work i could remove them, have a glass shop cut them down and I can re-install. But if they will work as is, it would save me the time and money.

Depending on your planned setup of return and drain lines one reason to lower the baffles is when turning the system off or a power failure the water in the lines flows back down into the sump and could siphon water from the display tank and from the looks of it you will flood your sump area! I am still setting up my system and have not run this yet but hopefully someone can back me up. If not be sure to read up on drain line power failures.

For how high the baffles are, it is a flood that will happen. That sump will be almost full during normal operation. When power goes out, you will have some water backflow from your return lines and water will go down your drain till it reaches your overflow.

I would just remove the baffles, have them cut down 3/4-1/2 the size and put them back in. You probably don't need all of them also. Having them cut and cost of one tube of GE Silicon I won't be that much.

alright, will work on that this weekend. really appreciate the feedback. i was thinking that they were going to be to tall. at least this way i can not set it up the way i want.

alright, here are my new measurements from left to right 40 gallon; 12x10 skimmer, 3 baffles 1" apart bubble trap, 8x10.5 return/heater,11.5x11 fuge. I measured 5" from the top and the others with the thought that no water would go higher than the top of skimmer cone in the skimmer section. The fuge a little over that 5" measurement from top. This design is based off RocketEngineer sump

man i have reefer madness! my overflow and tank are currently at the glass shop letting the silicone dry. the did a good job. I'm hoping they can help me with removing the current baffles in my 40 Gallon. i tried with a brand new razor blade and could not budge them.

any thoughts? I am going to drop my sump off today at the glass shop. Will be picking up my 75 gallon DT too. woot....one step closer.

I am not sure but you are deffantly doing the right thing removing them. They are way to high and will deffantly overflow

yea, i had a feeling they were to high when i picked it up. Not sure why the original owner installed them that high. oh well it is off to the glass shop today.

Yes, replace them, a couple hours work is better than replacing floors

Here are a few shots of how its been coming together. Hopefully do a leak test this week.
