400 W Ballast

I am building a canopy for my 75 gal. Tank, and I have 2 - 400 watt Ballasts. Do I need both of these or would 1 do the trick? How many fans would I need for 1 or both of the lights? And would I still need to add VHO to the mix?

I have 2-175w MH in my tank I think 400w is a little too much for a 75, But 1 bulb wont light the tank properly. Maybe both 400s and have them on separate timers alternating every 6 hrs would do the trick. I would put 2 small exhaust and 1 supply computer fans, all enclosed in a glass front so theres safety and minimum water evaporation.

The 400 w were given too me, but after further research I think I will try to sell them and go smaller. Thanks for the post!

whats the mh bulb K rating?

I would have to look. They came out of a Church Gym. So I'm sure the bulbs that came with them wont work for an aquarium but I'll check.

bulbs are most likely 4000K....IMO...without knowing the height of your tank (and what you want to keep)...its a little early to say if 400w is enough or too much...the dims of your tank should be first factor....

He says it's 75g. That's usually 48x18x20.

I agree that two 400w MHs are too much for a 75. Get two 250s and you'll be happier and pay less electric.
