4000 Watt Champion Generator $149.00 after $150.00 rebate at Kragen Auto Parts

I guess it's all relative... to me, the first link looks MUCH easier. Either way, you have to get 2 power sources (city power and generator power) into the transfer box, then the power must be routed through the transfer box to the circuts that you would like to power.

Personally I like the fact that the Square D box is the same manufacturer as the existing main breaker box that I have in my house. I like consistency. Again, personal preference.

Looks like I have to get some extension cords instead of the transfer switch, there does not seem to be room to install a transfer switch on each side of my breaker box! (door and water heater just next to each side)

The transfer box seems like a great idea but I don't need it. First my reef tank and fridge comes first so two heavy duty extension cords and a power strip is all I need. I might run some lights and maybe a TV if the power outage is extended. Don't forget that the more power you use the more fuel you burn. Also hooking the transfer switch means you will also provide power to all the useless devices ie. alarm clocks, thermostats, VCRs, DVD player, cable/sat boxes, routers, wall transformers and countless of silent energy hogs.

In a true emergency ie. earthquakes then you will have to worry about finding fuel for your generator so energy conservation is the key

Does anyone have a link to the cable that converts the RV plug of this generator to separate 110V?

The 110V outlet on this generator only use half the capacity of it (15Amps).

There are 2 VERY BAD assumptions in this statement.

First, you assume that the transfer switch will run every circut in the house. This is not true, most will only run 4 or 8 circuts, and you could set it up so that it is only running 1 or 2 circuts.

Second poor assumption is that devices like DVD players, computers, etc are "useless" devices. If the power is out in the evening, I may as well flip on the generator, turn on the projector and pop in a DVD. Not much else to do. :)

Thanks for clearing up my first assumption.

My second assumption was meant if does devices were on your circuit UNUSED that they will still be drawing power.

Wow, looks like the price went up...

I wish I can edit or update my first post in the thread. Here is the latest:

Folks have had good luck using 25% Customer Survey coupon on top of the rebate. You need buy something small first so you can enter your transaction number from you Kragen receipt. 25% coupon should arrive via email within an hour which you can bring to the store. Lot of people had success with this but some managers are anal and won't allow it so try another Kragen

25% survey coupon

I was just giving you a hard time.

As far as the transfer box versus the extension cords, one thing to keep in mind is that many people have their refrigerator built into the wall, so it isn't as easy as just unplugging the refrigerator and plugging in an extension cord.

You might also have to be doing all of this in the dark!

Personally, the hour or two it will take to install the transfer box is well worth not having to mess around in the dark plugging in an extension cord. Just pull the rip cord and flip the switch!

Just my 2 cents!

Okay, I'll chime in again... I had to go to the store 3 times before I found somebody who could do this. The first time I went the Assistant Manager let me pick up my generator without looking at my ID or my Credit Card. He then spent about half an hour trying to figure out why I needed the rebate authorization receipt when I had the rebate form in my hand already. He tried to print out the rebate form 3 times. I swear the guy was on something.

The second time I went back, it was the same guy but this time there was another employee there... this guy was no help either.

Finally, I went back a the next day (just happened to be in the area) and there was an old guy there who looked like he had worked at the store for 50+ years. It took him all of about 30 seconds to print out the receipt.

For those who are having trouble, try telling the cashier this:

1) Go to the main/beginning screen of the cash register
2) Select the option for "Rebates"
3) Enter product that requires rebate
4) Enter Customer Information
5) Enter Original Order/Invoice Number

Hope this helps!

Ok peeps read carefully: THIS IS IN THE SAN JOSE CA AREA, CHECK YOURS SPECIFICALLY..
after i found out that once you walk out the door with these generators (put gas in them) you cannot return them, i decided to contact champion to see wht type of service they offer. I was assured that if it didnt work you could take it to a local service center (located on senter rd in sj. and they would fix it no charge as long as the warranty was still in affect. SOOOOOO i looked up the number and called them only to find out that THEY DONT SERVICE CHAMPION GENERATORS.... seems he's recieved a few inquiries on these but has nothing to do with them ................... It really left me saying, HMMMMMMMM ???????? called them back because i wanted to find another center within decent range to san jose and was put on hold FOREVER......

Ok thanks for the heads up..
Maybe the warranty kind of sucks if you have a problem in the first year, after that you are on your own anyway. I just checked the price on the Chinese 6.5HP engine used on this generator and it's about $150 by itself. The price we are getting after rebate it really is a good deal. I think everyone who bought it started it up no problems mine included.

If I have a problem I only expect Champion to send me a part and I will repair it myself. If you want a better warranty or something that you can haul back to the store, I recommend buying one from sears and get an extended warranty from them. Their 5 year in home service is about $100 extra, 3 year is $60. A comparable 3500W model at Sears is $589 right now.

Like everything else you pay more and you get more. For us reefers the warranty won't matter though if there is an outage and it doesn't work, knock on wood

Yeah you get what you pay for.. I have a coleman 6250 works great but a little loud.... I am considering this one for a gift for my father.. but i agree for the price its a good deal..... I am just providing info for those who may not be inclined to recieve a part and install it themselves....

I picked up mine yesterday afternoon. I also got the wheels. last summer kelly, a fellow reefer, helped me out with some battery powered pumps when the power was out, now i am ready for the outages. keep up the post on upgrading this generator.

Has anyone received their rebate yet? I got a postcard yesterday telling me they could not honor my request because the receipt I submitted was dated after the qualifying period. I ordered it before the cutoff date but picked it up after and that is when the rebate receipt is dated????????

I have gotten my check already, I originally had the same problem as you, the day I made them print the receipt was already pass the purchase period.
but I called in and they resolved it and cut me a check
