400W metal halide

I beleive those are sodium MH's not suitable for aquariums, more for werehouses, barns and such. what type of ballast does it have on it.?

beats me..i saw 18$ and i figured someone would get a kick out of them....

i know they arent intended for aquariums but i would LOVE to see someone do it and actually have success with it.

kinda makes you think if this is 18$...
doesnt paying 400$ make it seem a BIT crazy?

not really, as you won't get success out of them. they won't produce the light spectrum you need, the reflectors are junk. so IMO 400.00 is not bad when it comes to keeping animals alive.

BTW ppl have "tried" to use them before.

oh :(

well the reason i found these is because im looking for lights...

i have a 29 gal that id like to be as REEFY as possible...but on a budget
so i found this

http://lancaster.craigslist.org/for/762733135.html

its 24" not 30 which is what i need but with the canopy i have built id only get one halide in the 30" fxture aswell.

and a 75 gal with cheap t5ho that i would like to UPGRADE and overdrive ...only thing is i dont know someone who knows enought to give a few pointers.

I used to run my 75 gal. using the icecap 4x54 watt T5HO setup. worked out great.

for some reason my comp. is not pulling up links sorry.

but I wasn't tring to put you down, so I hope you don't take it the wrong way. just some things in this hobby you don't really want to go cheap on. and lights and skimmer are the main two IMO.

the fixture may be to small to add individual reflectors. you can also ask in the DIY forum and see if anyone has done that with that fixture.

but with that fixture you should still be able to keep softies, LPS, and some of the easier SPS corals.

right now i have two BTA 1 yellow gorgonian onthe sand ...he does GREAT star polips always open zoas always open.

do you think adding another fixture exactly the same...so there are 8 bulbs would be much better?

one way or another i feel like buying another one or upgrading this one even if it means gutting would bring me around the same price.

well I don't think gutting it and turning it into a retrofit will do much good for the things you want to do. the only thing you really can save when gutting it would be the bulbs anyway.

if your gonna get a diff. fixture or add a fixture check out the nova extreme pro T5 fixtures they have individual reflectors for each bulb.

if you wanna do a retofit unit. all you would need would be 4 bulbs, 4 SLR reflecors, 4 sets of waterproof endcaps and standoffs and an icecap 660 ballast. or just check out reefgeek.com for complete retro units.

If you want to get stuff that will actually keep aquarium animals alive and not pay exorbitant aquarium prices, look at the hydroponics industry. There are some amazing products that are far more reasonably priced. The build quality is often better as well.
