400watt over 40g breeder?

I have a 40g breeder that I'm using as a prop tank right now, and the light I'm using right now is pretty shabby (250watt OceanLight). I was thinking of upgrading it to a 400watter, but not sure if that might bleach everything dead.

I have eggcrate holding the frags within 5 - 8 inches below the water line, and I have the light about 8" above the water.

It came with a 20K AB lamp, which I will wait until explodes to replace with a Phoenix 14K. But just wondering if a 400watt would be a better choice to keep SPS and zoos?

I like keeping zoos in really bright light, it seems to make them change colors more. Maybe because I'm toasting them, but heck, they are still spreading.

3" if you like it "well done" :D

I think you will need to hand it pretty high if you are using 400W. I'm sure your zoa will be tossed if you don't hang it high enough.

I have 250w over mine. I keep it close to the water to get some really nice color out of the sps.

Some of the frags have only and inch or so of water over them. Just enough that they are still submerged when I kill the return pump.

After seeing the colors coming out of Hunter's setup at Lucky Goldfish, I tried to do something similar.

400 is overkill. Though if you keep it higher up, it could be good for two 40 breeders front to back.

yeah, the way I have it now is the 250 is high enough so it doesn't get in my way at all.

but I need a new aquamedic aquafit hanging kit, one of the sides on my is broken, i have it getto rigged at the moment =X

I'll lower it to say 5" above the water, would that be ok?

my temp is good, always around 77 degrees in the basement =)

I think the 400w would be a complete overkill. 250s are plenty especialy in a breeder.

I completely agree there. Go buy ROAB's RO 3 fixtures. If I remember correctly, they have the best reflective capabilities according to Sanjay's research.

Or if you want, can always try a lumenarc. I got a fellow reefer hooked on it!
