40B aggressive tank need ideas......

After 11 years in the reef hobby, I took almost a two year break from anything aquarium related. I have been itching to get back into SW for a while now and with the recent $1\gal sale at petco, I couldn't resist picking up a 40 breeder.

I have always wanted to set up an aggressive tank, just never did. So I figured why not now. I'd like to keep some kind of dwarf lion, maybe a fuzzy or mombasa.. and possibly a larger pair of maroon clowns?

Not real sure yet, but if you have any ideas, suggestions, or preferably pics please share them with me.

Thanks in advance..

The mobasse lionfish is going to outgrow the 40B but I personally think you could definitely go with a trio (M-F-F) of dwarf fuzzies and a pair of maroons. That would be a pretty neat tank.

I think a 36" tank will be a bit tight for a trio of fuzzies, but the fuzzy dwarf is indeed a great choice. The clowns will be too aggressive for the lionfish in the long run. I realize that peeps consider lions "aggressive", but they're actually one of the most passive families of fish there is, as long as their tankmates aren't snack-size. Fortunately, fuzzies have fairly small mouths, which opens up the tankmate possibilities.

A nice tank might be a fuzzy, a fu manchu, and a bristletail filefish. Get the fu established before the fuzzy, as fuzzies are happy gluttons.

You could also go with a fuzzy or barberi lionfish and a couple of waspfish or a fuzzy/bristletail/GDM setup.

The barberis are nice but I've never actually seen them for sale anywhere.

DD does get them in on occasion, esp. now that interest in scorps is kind of picking up a bit.

We found our specimen as a dime-sized juvie in a LFS, but she was being sold as a "dwarf lionfish". IIRC, we paid like $18 for her.

One of the "problems" is that adult barberi are rather drab compared to their cogeners, so I think collectors tend to pass them up, which is really a shame for the hobbyist, as they're a really great little fish.
