Thanks man. Ya, never a dull moment. The heater was set with the apex to turn on at 77.5 and off at 78. Well... the heater was turned on but the heater itself thought that the temp was ok at 75....

I lost my red dragon mini colony completely and had to emergency frag my SSC colony.

I have been having some issues with extremely stagnant growth in this tank since I started it. At first, I thought it was water chemistry, so I have been agonizing over that for about 8 months. I thought it was too much/too little dkh, too much/too little phosphates, etc. However, I finally got a hold of my reef club's apogee meter to see what my g1 standard radion was putting out and low and behold my PAR is extremely low. I had the radion suspended 10'' above the tank at 75% intensity. I thought this was more than enough, yet the apogee says most of my SPS are below 300 PAR, with many of them only getting around 200. Way too low! I have since dropped the radion to 8'' above the water and cranked it up to 90% intensity. Now I have most corals getting around 350 to 400. Much better, but this has me thinking that it might be best to upgrade to the radion pro...

I also added some rocks to have more spots for corals and to place them higher for better lighting. Nothing much to look at right now, but here are some pics of the scape now. After two days of increased lighting I am noticing that my corals are responding. Only time will tell if it is positive or negative lol.

Tanks still looking good despite the slightly lower PAR. I think an upgrade to the Radion Pro along with the new wide angle lens (not released yet) will be awesome for your tank. My buddy started to get better SPS colours after changing from Gen1 Radion to the Pro version.

Thanks sahin. I was thinking about the new wide-angle lens that is actually out now, but the numbers that ecotech has put out with a fixture set to 12k @ 100% intensity shows that within about a 24in radius you only get 200 PAR or so. IMO, not worth it, right?

I think that at the very least, I am going to get myself a pair of the TIR lenses, as I am running this g1 radion completely stock from when I got it when they originally shipped. A pro may be a good option if I can free up some cash though. I have never really had a problem with getting good colors, but the growth on this tank has never really been great and I am hoping the low lighting is the issue. I had the same radion and equipment set up over a 60g cube 1.5 years ago and I was AMAZING growth and colors, so maybe I just had the light hung too high?

What does your friend think are the colors that the Pro brings out more? How did his SPS respond specifically?

I hadnt realised that the lens was already out and that the PAR is so low. Everyone I know runs their Radions way less than 100% - usually they run somewhere in the region of around 50-64%. So I assumed that with the new wide angle lens the PAR would be spread out a little more without a hotspot, but didnt think that the overall PAR would be reduced so much. I thought the coverage would increase, and most people could push the intensity nearer to the max and get very good PAR and spread at the same time.

Well, I was wrong, if the PAR levels are as you say.

As for colours, one of my buddies SPS corals just coloured up so much after he changed to the Pro. He felt it was the addition of the Actinic LED's that made the difference.

Here are a bunch of photos I took of his tank because I was so impressed with his SPS colours:

Couldnt quite capture the intense green of this one, looks brighter in person.

Managed to pick out the golden colour on this one. Looks superb under LED's!

Two very nice Monti's. The one behind is a lovely light sky blue, but couldnt capture its colour.

Any LPS looks amazing in the evening under the Actinic and Royal Blue LED's. But you can see his colours are pretty good, considering he hasnt even been into SPS corals.

I almost ordered a couple of Radion Pro's for my tank and was thinking of getting the wide angle lens. However, I went with the ATI LED Powermodule in the end.

A number of people have said to me that the coral colours are more pleasing to the eye under the Pro's.

This is the PAR readings that Ecotech has posted for the wide angle lens. I'm not sure if it would be enough. After playing around with my settings on my g1 radion, I have found that 80% intensity @ 14k at 8'' above my water line will give my SPS enough PAR for now, averaging around 350-400 each. I don't think that I will need 100%, but I may get the TIR lenses just so I can run the fixture a little lower and cooler.

If those pics are your tank stressed then i wanna see it when everything's happy again. Tanks like this are really making me want to give LED a go.

Tank looks great.....
Thanks! I do what I can with what I've got.

Thanks for the kind words man! I'm glad that you like my tank. I am definitely sold on LEDs and will probably always be running the in my tank for the foreseeable future.

Nice tank! I like the aquascaping and how it allows good coral placement.
I am sold on LEDs also. My growth is matching my other tank under MH but the colors are better under the LEDs.

That's awesome! The LEDs are getting better and better at getting the growth and color up there with MH. I am trying to wrap my head around how I should be running my Radion to get the best color/growth out of my SPS. I'm not sure if upgrading to the radion for the violets would be worth it or not...

A local SPS keeper had increased color on growth tips after adding violets. I had violets from the beginning so I have nothing to compare it to. You can add violets with a DIY kit for 55.00

I don't have much of an update yet. I have drastically reduced the amount of biopellets, added TIR lenses and reduced the overall intensity of the radion to 60%, and have kept nutrients raised for a bit. The corals are going through a transition, so hopefully I should have nice pics sooner or later. Until then, I will leave you with a pic of my new 30k lokani frag :)

I have been thinking about adding some violets to the sides of the fixture or maybe just dropping the cash to upgrade the fixture through ecotech marine.

You lucky dog! The 30K Lokani is one of my fav corals. If you can get it coloured up and grown out it will easily look the best coral in your tank. Well done on acquiring the frag.

Oh man, I hate you! I had a 30k leagues lokani years ago and lost it during a transfer along with my grapes of wrath lokani...amazingly gorgeous coral! Best of luck with her...shes a slow grower (IME) but worth the wait. Still looking for a frag local to me since the man I traded with lost his. Congrats on the new addition!

It is pretty awesome for sure! A local has a huge colony, one of the few that I have ever seen, local or on the internet. I can't wait to see what it does.

:D I have read that it is a slow grower. The guy I got it from got it as a frag, but after three years the colony is the size of a salad plate. We'll see how it likes my tank.
