40G Starfire BB SPS Build Thread

I'll take some pics later on. I placed the frags and they are still alive, but, not showing ANY growth at all, whether it be encrusting or anything. Also, my polyp extension is minimal at best. I've lost a few of the the frags. My tank was definitely not SPS ready.... Sucks, especially since they were pretty expensive frags. But, it bothers me that things aren't starting to encrust yet since the tank is now over 3 months old. Time will tell. I'll post some pics later on.

bump for pics
I will post some pics tomorrow, I promise. They can be my before pics. I started Zeovit today! I am using it primarily because I have some areas with some weird stringy algae after experimenting with the PolypLabs Reefresh system. So, I figured I'd give Zeo a try since the cost is very minimal on a tank of my size.

frags

Nice list and frags. I have wanted to order from upscales but those frags from them are smaller than I would have thought.

How big were they? May think twice.

I definatly wanted to get their Microlades, Loripes, & elegans

Joe

Microclados was a good 3/4-1"....grows at a pretty good rate though. They are a good vendor to deal with, IMO

As requested, here's some updated pics. Hopefully the slime algae in the pics starts to subside with the start of Zeo...

do you have a turkey baster? use it to get the algae off the rocks and corals.

it looks good now take it slow with zeo and it will get the algae taken care of, how are you running the ZEOlites in the mce600 media chamber perhaps?

Also, if I turkey baste it, it just comes back a few hours alter(as long as the lights are on)

keep it up. as long as you have the algae. try to be gentle though.

also remember to close the air tap on your skimmer before dosing Zeobak and zeofood7 so that it gets to the zeolites before being skimmed out.

Do you dose right on top of the media chamber, or right near the intake of the skimmer? Also how long do you leave the airtap closed for?

nice you have put alot of effort into the build, I think your lr is too chunky and you will end up not liking it , is there any possibility you could get some attractive, thick branching? It would look alot better imo

Nice looking tank. I'd love to do something along the lines that you have done and go all out and have a smaller cube-ish tank made from starfire glass.

I'd be interested to see what you're tank looks like in a year from now as those frags start to take off in their growth.

Its funny you say that. I actually have about 60 lbs of branch/flat rock that I purchased when I had those crazY hair algae issues. It is in a tub with a few powerheads. But, I am very hesitant to take everything out and redo the scape. Eventually I plan on plumbing in this tub to give me some more total water volume. For now, I'm gonna wait till eveything starts looking good again.

Thanks victor.

do it now, is not like you are going to wreck any thing thats established, and you have the lr cured, with branch its light and allows better water flow underneath. With a wc, siphon the algae, up or redirect your flow, you cant have enough, i have a 5000 lph return and a vortech on a 60 cube, i am getting another vortech;) great build good luck

You just have a classic case of New Tank Syndrome, I think all of us have been thru it. Nice tank tho and dont worry once your tank is settled the sps will take off and start encrusting and growing like mad.
