40g sump overkill for 40g breeder DT?

With my 36g bow front fallow for a few months and petco having its $1 gallon sale, I figure it's a good time to move everything to a 40g breeder. I bought a 20g long with plans on using that as the sump but thought that bigger might be better. So I'm thinking of getting a second 40g breeder to use as the sump. But would that be overkill? Should I just go ahead and use the 20 long as the sump? I don't really plan on going bigger than 40 any time soon. I will be making my own stand and the design will be a bit tricky but I'm sure I could figure something out so that won't be much of a problem.

absolutely! just keep in mind you need a little space around the rim of your sump for possible add ons later. I have a pretty large acrylic sump under my 40 and have multiple reactors hanging on the edge. I barely have the clearance for the door to shut on the stand. Just keep that in mind when you build the stand.

I'm running a 40b/40b combo, but my sump is in the basement. To answer your question, no, it isn't overkill. I've read somewhere on RC, someone was using a 75 ( I think) with a 400 gallon tub.

I have a 225g sump on my 225g tank.

You should always go as big as space allows as the more volume you have,the more stable you system will be.

Good for you. I think that's a great decision. I have a 125g sump/refugium under my 65g shallow reef and 25g frag tank combo. And a 180g sump/refugium/DSB under a 180g reef and 75g hexagon DT. Bigger is better.
