44 Gallon DIY All-in-one

Well, today is the test run for the lights to see if I need to add any fans or not to the canopy. So far, the lights have been on for over an hour, and it's only raised the temp by 0.3 degrees. We'll see what happens around noon today... hopefully it doesn't go up anymore!!

Temp got up to 78... so, definately fans! So, I turned the lights off... it was a good experiment, so now I know that I definately need fans!

i have (4) 120mm pc fans & (2) power supplies that have molex plugs (plug right into the fans) that would work very well on your controller.....you could do (2) on each power supply & have the controller power them on in stages

i'd let them go cheap since they are extras from my build :)

i'm doing (2) on each side of my canopy blowing across the lights & (2) behind the tank blowing upwards to help push the air up towards the top vent slot :D

Thanks for the offer... but I have some fans I'm going to retro in. I just needed to do the test to be double sure that I even needed them!

doing mine in semi-gloss black....gonna use kilz mixed w/ a small amount of the paint to primer it 1st. guy at HD said that should give it a good kilz protective barrier & the greyish color will be easier to do black over in fewer coats

This is freakin' awesome mini. I'm really at a loss for words you've done such a good job! In my opinion, the DIY portion of this hobby is almost the most fun part. If anything, it's definitaley the most rewarding!

Can't wait to see it in a few weeks, and you better make sure you get some sweet frags for valentines day!

Im sure you mentioned this before but I just wanted to know why you decided to go all in one? Having a sump makes life so much easier sometimes. What kind of protein skimmer do you plan on running?

The reason that I went all in one is b/c of my wife... and where the tank is going to be at. She doesn't like the plumbing and everything, so I had to cut that out in order for her to go along with it. I am planning on getting a sapphire protein skimmer, or I'm going to DIY my own. I haven't decided yet which to do.

Was having a little looksie at the tank on Saturday... and came across this... CORALINE!!! Life has arrived, and should start to take off soon! I'm thinking about taking a water sample somewhere to get tested... I also got a cup of live sand, and three sandwich bags of cheato from my fellow board members of my club!! So, hopefully I have worms and pods and such crawling around everywhere soon!! Anyways, here's the pictures:

DIATOMS!!!! Well, did a check on my params last night... and my cycle is in the beginnings... 0.25 ammo, 0 trites, and 0 trates. Looks like I have another week or two before I'm ready! Here's the pictures:

Please excuse the micro-bubble problem that I'm having right now. I'm working on fixing it, and it should be taken care of before the livestock hit's the tank. I'll hopefully have it done this weekend!!!

Well, did a water test this weekend... 0 ammo, 0 trites, and about 7 trates. Cycle is over... at least the first part is! So, I got 3 red footed snails, and 4 nissarius snails on Saturday. The red footed snails are going nuts on the diatoms, and are cleaning it up like crazy! So, they are doing their job... and I expect the glass and everything to be clean in at least a week, it not two. I also got my first "test coral" to see how it does. Thankfully, my buddy Kevin has a galaxia putting out babies by the dozen, so I grabbed a small 2 polyp baby from his tank and put it into my tank at home. As of this morning, it was opening up well. So, if this guy does good over the next week, I'll start to slowly add stuff to my tank! Tonight is water change night... the first of many many more!

Glad to hear things are going smoothly for you. Out of curiosity are you going to keep the galaxia if it survives the tank? As you probably know they can put some very long and mean sweeper tentacles :eek1:

I really like the rockscaping, looks really nice! :)

Yea, I plan on keeping the galaxia... I know about the sweepers. I've kept galaxia before, and I have just the right spot for it once I get other things.

Thanks for the compliment on the scaping! I like it a lot too... gives me a TON of options for placement! Plus, I have my clam lagoon :)

So, I have decided to get a fan and try it out... I'm not happy with how warm the tank is getting, so I just got an 80mm fan that runs at 14 DBA and pushes 32 CFM for only $16 shipped. So, I'm going to get it hooked up to the controller, and when the temp gets above a set point, it'll kick on, then off when it gets to the desired temp. I'm going to only try 1 and see if it works. If it doesn't work, time for 2!!

It's been a while, so I thought it would be a good time to give an update (minus pictures b/c my camera batteries are dead... again). I have had some coral in there for a week now, and everything is looking good. Nothing has lost color, PE is excellent, and I even have one that's gaining some color back (lost b/c of harsh conditions in travel). I also got my first fish... it's a Yellow Coris Wrasse (Halichoeres Chrysus) that is doing wonderfully, and eating like a pig! I'll hopefully have more coral in there this weekend, and then it's just time to let things settle in, do some water changes, and watch it grow!

I also was able to get my fan installed into the canopy... I must say, very powerful, and dead silent!! My ballast is louder than my fan is. Installing that allows me to run my reef at whatever temp I want it to be, so I have the controller to use the set temps it has in there for the seasons. So, now my lights and my temps will be based upon the seasons!

Okay, here are the pictures of my fully stocked tank. Now, I don't really have many pods, so don't mind the algea/diatomus algea on the rocks. This will go away soon once the pods and the hermits come into the tank. Sorry about the quality... my camera sucks.

Here's the fans I've been talking about:
