45 Galllon Cube. My dream tank...only smaller!

I agree with jon, some cerry picked monties would rock right there.

That is a tasty monty BTW, i would eat it.

wanna break a hunk off for your brotha? That looks incredible!

Ive not seen that particular piece. Its not fair that I dont have access to the variety that you do...oh well, it doesnt hurt to have a particular coral to have in hand to go out shopping for and so far its my choice of jedimindtrick and jons rainbow sunset! Both extremely difficult to come across however. By all means if anyone has somehting alond these lines in Ohio where it would be feasible to have it shipped or I can do pickup, that would be awesome!

ANyone else have a specific coral that they would go with?

I would love to Bro! I may just be able to do that in a month or so.. You can also PM a guy by the name of MGNY (Mike) on RC.... Tell him I sent you... He may be able to send you a piece along with some other pretty cool stuff ;)

Yes I would also get a nice encrusting monti and it would look cool.
Go for an exotic show stopper centre piece to occupy that prime live rock real estate :D

Yeah they are not something you want to have! You can imediately tell if you have them because you will find snails and shrimp posiibly even fish carcasses covered in a ball of mucous. They are viscious and not something you can just live with. Especially if you have clams. Those are their favorite!

I have just found this thread. Love the tank and pics you are doing a fantastic job. So I started at the beginning and got up to this part and am wondering if i have this worm. Bought my tank, complete set up like 3 years ago and have lost more fish than I care to admit. They are all fine and eating at night and when morning comes they are dead and covered in mucus. My clam I had for 6 months and was great all of a sudden 1 day was a ball of mucus and dead. I wonder if this has been my problem these few years. Hmm. Is there a way to make a trap? Or a way to find it? Sorry not meaning to hijack your thread but out of the 3 years of wondering what's going on in my tank I wonder if this is an answer. Thanks! Ok. Back to reading. Only 20 more pages to go.

Sounds like it is more than likely that u got yourself a Eunice or fulgida worm. I'm so sorry to hear it cause these thugs are a pita to catch if not impossible. The best trap I've seen is one by a guy here on rc that u can find by searching oringo fulgida. All I can say is good luck bud I tried for year and a half to catch mine with no luck but I never tried the one I'm telling u about. They seem to have pretty good luck with them. In the end I had to bleach my rock to make sure it was gone then I got another one in the seed rock I used. I had to bust up the rock to get it out but it was absolutely neccasary!

An efflo would look great tabling off that shelf.

I have avoided tabling coral cause of the size of my tank. If one grew to a decent size it would shade my clam and large red cap below. I'd love to have one though dang it.

Hey I may have found that piece of dragons breath macro but if u have some available along with any other green macros I'm open to buying them. My caulerpa went sexual and wiped everything out but the red macros u gave me so I have to start over.

I'm willing to wait or go through your buddy, doesn't matter. I'll give him a pm

Yep u guys are right it's gotta be an encrusting monti. Any Acro would shade the coral and clam around it. So u have a showstopper in mind?

Cool. I will sit a small rock next to it tonight.. Hopefully nature will take its place and I should have something for you in a month or so.. Mike is a great guy and I know he usually has some really cool stuff at the ready..

Try to make it as flat as possible please. The spot for it is completely flat so any bumps will look huge. lol I really appreciate you doing that for me Jon, youre awesome!

So should I still contact your buddy?

Yep Chris, Jon's monti is a full fledged show stopper.
No pun intended :D
Wonder how it will look under the LEDs u have. Must be amazin!

Noob, I only have the stunner strip leds for actinic. Is that whay you mean? I think it will pop like mad under them! Im already hooked so I will wait for Jon to get a piece for me. Im a guy that appreciates relationships more than just to shell out cash for what I want, so the history and satisfaction of having a piece from a fellow reefer is the way to go for me.

Skinnipuppi's macro for example makes me care for my fuge more so he is able to know that I appreciate him sending it to me. I know thats gotta make him feel good to know he helped my tank look more beautiful. I have sold a bunch of my stuff to jrcasteel and cant wait to see his tank go up and grow out my coral. That just means more to me than putting in an order online and getting what I get...im wierd.

Tank is looking really good Chris, can't wait to see it in a years time.

THanks dude! I hope in a years time that I will be rid of the damn dinos in my tank...they just dont seem to be going anywhere and recently theyve began to increase their length and density. Im hoping that its my ro filters prefilter and carbon needing to be changed. Its strane though since the tds is still low at 1-2ppm out of the ro side and 0 out of the di but I know that there can be a ton of contaminants that are there even at such a low ppm. We have a cistern here and when we get heavy rain the sediment in the holding tank gets stirred up and clogs the filters pretty bad, plus we use bleach as the disinfectant for it and when the chlorine level gets high it puts that much more stress on the filters...I cant change them since its under my sink(I cant bend yet) so Im hoping the mrs will crawl under there and do it soon.

Have you started a build thread yet? Also, I am reading back through my thread to find the recipe for acid bathing your dry rocks. Given all the crap thats happend since I did it, Ive forgot how to do it. Ill get back to you when I find it.

Here ya go, this is my write up on the dry rock acid bathing process.

Well, it wasnt the most sceintific of approaches...lol we were shooting for a 10:1 water to acid ratio. We used muratic acid(31% hydrocloric acid) that you can get at the hardware store either in the tile section where it is used to clean up grout and to etch concrete prior to painting, or in the paint department. His rock looked freshly plucked from the ocean and only dried for a short time. Theres no way to know for sure but there was a lot of dead algae on it.

We scrubbed the loose stuff with a wire brush after soaking in freshwater overnight. After that, add your water(ro.di if you want, my water is rainwater from a cistern so its low in tds) using a gallon pitcher so you know how much you put in. We just covered the rock with water. It was 17gal. So to get a 10:1 we shouldve used 26 cups of acid. I only had a half gallon at my house so we just used that much on the first go. Make sure you always pour acid into water, not the other way around or you risk having it bubble out of control and splashing it on yourself. It was FILTHY on the first round(the pics are of the second bath). I put a powerhead in the bin with it and let it do its thing for around half hour.

We carefully, using chemical gloves and eye protection, emptied out the bin and dumped it in a flowerbed that Only contains weeds(project that got backburnered due to my tank build this summer). Then we filled the bin with new freswater after rinsing the rocks with a hose. We added a few tbsp of baking soda to nuetralize the acid and let it soak with the powerhead running while we went to the store to get more acid.

When we got home, we dumped the water out and filled it again with freshwater and started to add the acid. It was a different brand than the stuff I had and it said it was 90% less fumes plus didnt give a percentage of HCL. We assumed it was a weeker solution so we added the whole gallon. That was probably a mistake. We let it soak for another 20 mins then dumped and added new water with baking soda again and allowed that to soak for 20mins.

He then took the rock home where hes currently doing rodi soaks with baking soda for 24 hours. Once the ph of the water is above 7 the rock should be ready to go in the tank.

Now, he says the rock is really brittle. I think using the full gallon of acid was too much. Ill tell ya though, that rock was FULL of nasties. I would be leary as hell of using it in my own tank right out of the box so im glad we did it for him. However, if I were to do it again I would stick on the low side of the 10:1 ratio and make sure that whatever acid you get has a clear label of HCL concentration. Good luck!

Cool, thanks Jon. If its a problem at all to keep it flat dont sweat it. i actually like the craggly look of yours! Maybe ill glue a bunch of rubble up there to give it some texture. Also I contacted your buddy and he didnt have much in the way of encrusting montis so im countin on you buddy! THis will be my first long distance coral purchase so you got a lot riding on this man! Why dont you send me a good FTS and let me do a frag pack to make it worth your time. what do you think? I think I want to replace a few corals in my tank to some nicer pieces and you have lots of those. I dont want to pry on you man but im sure you have some frags you need to get rid of! It would be an honor again to have your coral in my tank!
