48" LED SPS reef

Your tanks look great. Your rock work in the nano is one of a kind.

Are you going to run a chiller on the SPS tank? Last time I checked the CA temps can be pretty high.

Keep up the good work.

bowfront- not exactly, it does have room with a 3 way adapter for more Stunner strips. The fixture does work with the Profilux controller and is dim-able. You can not control individual LEDs on each strip but you can control added strips separate if you had a controller.

dcook- Yup, the pictures are out.

ti-christ- That tank was set up only using 4 pieces of rock and a piece of pvc. I drilled a hole through the rocks in the place I thought was appropriate for the look I wanted. Then epoxied them together. Most of the hard part was picking the right rocks and taking the time with the drilling.

Josh- I totally agree with you! I'm trying to achieve great color, healthy corals and proper growth for the environment.

maddog2002- I will have some more close ups of the SPS in the next few days.

fredknack- Thank you, I tried to do something a bit different from the norm. Also I won't be using a chiller on the SPS tank, the room the tank stays in will never get above 76 so I think I will be ok.

Thanks for your answer. How did you fix the PVC tube on the bottom of the tank? Because the rock are probably heavy!!!

I didn't drill 100% through the bottom rock (the heaviest) and the top rock and used it like a stand and cap. I used a cement bit to drill through the rocks then a hole saw to get the hole big enough to slide the PVC into it. It is VERY sturdy, hope this helps.

Please let me know if you use this in your tank I'd love for you to post it here.

My goal was to create a sustainable and economical aquarium that would be easy to maintain and still fun. I want to enjoy the hobby and time looking at my tank not throw money and time down the drain because someone else thinks they know what I want.

Subscribed... to the thread and to your philosophy on the hobby!

John, like your little nano. Inspired me to do this last week:

Only one little SPS yet, but I am still tweaking the lighting.

BTW it used to be "rock wall" lol:

pic is from LONG ago.

29g AGA lit with 2 panorama LED modules and 2x24w Geismann actinic T5s. Went from 250+ watts to 72 and the corals are loving it. I have an additional all blue Panorama and another 50/50 to add soon I just have to figure out where. I am still playing with my coral placement, most notably the large acan colonies in the middle, any suggestions from the Scape Guru?

Didnt mean to hijack, but thought it was relevant to the LED and scape...

Do you think this setup will work?
135G Max Reef (SPS, LPS) 72L*18W*24H tank,
using 10 to 12 Panorama 12 watt LED Modules(same modules found in Ecoxotic Panorama Fixture) ?

I know you didnt ask me, but I have a lot of experience with these modules, unfortunately Ecoxotic played a trick on us... The modules in the fixtures have a nifty little polished aluminum reflector around the LEDs, I wish I had a pic to show you what I am talking about. The reflector helps direct the light into the tank, the seperate modules are missing these nifty little pieces of aluminum, and therefore do not focus the light nearly as much. I have heard rumors of lenses or optics of some sort being made available for the modules, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

So for the long answer I would say no, you are not going to get the same amount of light out of the modules as you would out of the same amount in a fixture due to the reflectors. I dont have a PAR meter or any other way to measure, but I think the fixtures provide more useable light in the tank than the modules do. There is a lot of "bleed" sideways from the modules, where the fixture doesnt have the same effect.

Am I about right John?

Edit: Also on a 6 foot tank, they would recomend 3 2 foot fixtures, which would be 18 modules WITH reflectors. I believe that would be a TON more light than the 10-12 module idea you had. I supplement my Panoramas with T5 actinic, and I love it, if you were to do that it may allow you to do your 10-12 module Idea... just a thought.

I think if you had a valley in the middle of the tank or kept the rock dominated to a single side with just a patch on the other and kept the LEDs over the rock you would be able to to whatever you wanted. It would also give you a very dramatic and more natural look.

So if you could envision this with me. Keep the strips going front to back like I have them and keep them about 8" from the side panes of glass and put one strip about every 6" of where you want coral. leaving a small gap somewhere. This would give you pretty good coverage and with "clean" and "clear" water you should be able to do whatever you want.

I have 12 Panorama Modules over my 48" tank so if you cut out the 8"s on each side that would shave down 16" and you would have less algae growth on the glass and who grows corals on the glass anyway? Then space the center or one of the sides out and it would be awesome!

I can't wait to see it, please post pictures.

From my understanding the modules that are currently available separate from the fixtures do not have the reflector "yet" the new ones will though. Also they are supposed to have a version with an optic (60* lens) of some sort for deeper tanks over 30"s.

Depending on how quick you are looking to do a new setup Ecoxotics new 50w multichip LED pendent/retro fit might be available as well.

WOW, what a success story those pictures are. Look at all that open space and room, love the overhangs and valleys. Great use of positive and negative space! Keep us up to date.

Thanks for all the answers!
I replaced my T5 bulbs 3 months ago. I will move to LED before the next replacement of T5.
So I still have time to wait.
Do you have any idea of when reflector version, optic version or 50w multichip LED pendent/retro fit will come out?

Maybe Hybrid version: T5 + LED is another choose for me.

So I've noticed in the last week (last few days mostly) a considerable increase in coral coloration and growth.

The blues photograph a little strange and I need to figure out how to shoot them. When I shoot a blue coral the whites in the pictures get a blue glow to them. It isn't in them in real life and the blue probably doesn't pop as much as it looks (very close).

Excuse the poor quality pics I was shooting handheld with a terrible lens on my extension tubes.

Hybrid might work as well, I chose to go full LED to get the maximum benefit of efficiency.

I'm guessing 6-9 weeks from what was said at Reefstock 2010.

Thanks for the reply it explains things more. I wasn't aware that the Profilux controller was compatable with dimming these. I really like the looks and design of the Panorama fixture. Keep this thread going because there are many of us interested in new LED technology. You obviously know what you are doing. I think we all like the picture of your other LED tank. Real nice work on the scape.

No problem, just trying to get people informed.

I wouldn't say I know what I'm doing just yet LOL! I can still kill a coral with the best of them.
