5-6 hour car-ride clam transport

hello!

we are about to transport a 2-3" clam on a 5-6 hour car ride.

our plan is this:
1) put him in a 5G bucket filled w/ about 3G water from his original tank.
2) monitor temperature and use a heatpack if necessary
3) off a dc/ac converter, feed the buckets w/ bubbler (also moving some fish, 2-3 small fish per similar bucket). i'll rotate the bubbler every 30 mintues or so between the 3 buckets.

now my question is this, as my buddy and i are driving down the I5 as we speak, we noticed the ride is kinda bumpy. the fish will be fine, but how about the clam that is obviously going to be on the bottom of the bucket? how can i make his ride a bit more pleasurable?

we were thinking of maybe askingn for a bit of sand to put at the bottom of the bucket? trying to suspend an open bag in the middle? not sure how to do this... or maybe he'd be ok and we are just being over paranoid?

hopefully someone can reply w/in an hour or so because that's about the time we'll begin the transport.

thanks!

It is probably too late, but you should use the standard method of double bagging it, fill it with oxygen and place it in a styrofoam box. The styro-foam is fantastic at insulation, and you can probably just forget the bubbler and the heat pack. Just crank up the heater in the car. When they ship clams, it can take over 12 hours to get to their destination, so your 5-6 hour ride should be fine.

Also too late, but I would have just bagged him with lots of airspace and put him in styrofoam cooler. Maybe a heat pack or 2 taped to the lid.

Let us know how you made out.

heya!

ya, a bit late. but thanks for the responses!

what we did: he was in a 5G bucket w/ about 3G water and 3 blue/green chromis's. the chromises were swimming freely. the clam was in an aquarium bag that we left open and attached 1/2 of the lip of teh bag to the lid.

so the bad was kinda suspended. free air circulation and in essence a 3G water bath that it was in. seems to be ok, it's in my 100G now. guess i'll know tomorrow for sure when the lights come on!
