Yea there are way bigger lobster out there. The biggest spiny that I have ever heard of is a 15 lbs caught off Vero Beach. However, due to the overfishing in south Florida it is almost impossible to get any lobster that is as big as this one. This season I only saw one that was as big as this one and it was caught during mini-season. I came up with a theory of why I was able to find this guy. The reef that I found him on, its dived almost everyday and all the lobsters have been picked months ago. However, when I did it a couple of days ago, I saw more than 10 lobsters, including this one on the reef. My theory is that they are starting to migrate. They probably came up from reefs further south that are not dived often and at dawn they seeked refuge in the reefs off Miami Beach. I was just lucky enough to dive that reef on that day. I was actually pulling up the anchor chain when I saw him. Our anchor was on a ledge right above him. I didnt have gloves or anything so I had to go back to the boat and borrow some lobster gear. Even with 1.5 mm gloves my hands got torn up. Nobody believed me when I told them there was a monster down there. Well I proved them wrong.
