Hi everybody,

This is probably not the right forum to post a dead lobster at, but I just had to brag. Caught this guy off Miami Beach yesterday. Dont let anybody tell you that all the big lobsters are gone.

How time have changed

My father-in-law (who will remain nameless) was born in Lauderdale and told me time when he was a kid in the 40's, he and his friends would swim out off sunrise blvd and they would turn over some live corals that were hollow to find 30+ lobster at a time. Back in the day, the best way to get them was to "GIG" them with a spear or stick a mop into their hold to tangle them up.

The stories made me nauseous. Similar to the recent capture of they guy with 300 corals last week.

Ironically, now he is now quite the conservationist (dare I say liberal). He live is Sebastian where he Snook fishes.

Yea there are way bigger lobster out there. The biggest spiny that I have ever heard of is a 15 lbs caught off Vero Beach. However, due to the overfishing in south Florida it is almost impossible to get any lobster that is as big as this one. This season I only saw one that was as big as this one and it was caught during mini-season. I came up with a theory of why I was able to find this guy. The reef that I found him on, its dived almost everyday and all the lobsters have been picked months ago. However, when I did it a couple of days ago, I saw more than 10 lobsters, including this one on the reef. My theory is that they are starting to migrate. They probably came up from reefs further south that are not dived often and at dawn they seeked refuge in the reefs off Miami Beach. I was just lucky enough to dive that reef on that day. I was actually pulling up the anchor chain when I saw him. Our anchor was on a ledge right above him. I didnt have gloves or anything so I had to go back to the boat and borrow some lobster gear. Even with 1.5 mm gloves my hands got torn up. Nobody believed me when I told them there was a monster down there. Well I proved them wrong.
