I want my riser to be shorter. I may have to do some more custom acrylic shaping and make my own riser cone. I just do not look forward to bonding a flange to the skimmer body. Weldon 16 was weak at pvc to acrylic bond. Any suggestions?

Interesting link Dale, but I gotta wonder why he went through the trouble to make it 6-sided? Seems like an aweful lot of work.

Thanks Scott! The cone and riser worked great! I ended up using 10.5 acrylic instead of the 12 inch PVC. I just made a little mod to the riser you made me.

Crafsmanship still counts for something.

Dale,
Spazz did a great job on my cone! It makes a great transition.

I have seen his work, and it is awesome. If I were in the market to buy acrylic work, I would not hesitate to purchase. But alas, I am a die hard DIYer. I made my new lid last night with custom formed acrylic. I loved shaping it. I already have an idea for how to make the forms to do it. I just need to find a reliable adhesive for acrylic to pvc.

weldon 40 is the only way to go. its a PIA to use but will make bonds that are stronger than the acrylic itself. trust me. i have broke a couple of skimmer bodies right where the fittings are glued. the test tank was one of them fittings. and that was 1/4" acrylic. the body broke not glued fitting.

Weldon 40 it is then. I will have to order it.
get 3 10 cc syringes, a small thing of vasaline, and some 30 cc mixing cups. use the syringes to mesure the 2 different parts of the weldon 40 than add them to the mixing cup. stir with a stick slowly so you dont get bubbles in the epoxy. then pour that int othe 3rd clean syringe. remove any air the start gluing. the vasiline is to keep the plunger from getting gooed up. smear the rubber with a little vasiline before every use. that will make it easy to remove the epoxy from the syringe after it has cured. just peal it off. it wont stick to the plastic of the syringe. have paper towels ther to catch any drips off of the syringes. also wrap clear packing tape around the syringe to prevent the writing from comming off. the epoxy takes it right off the outside of the syringe.

Great advice SPAZZ! I have been working with Weld-On 4 and 16 and doing just fine with a bit of a learning curve, and then suddenly my applicator stopped flowing. I have to guess that the 4 hardened inside the needle, and I can't get it to flow again. Any suggestions? Maybe rubbing alcohol? Work is stopped until I get more applicators or I get his one going again, and the needle is so fine, I can't find anything to run through it.

Where do you get 40? My acrylic supplier only has 4 and 16. Also, can you recommend a thicker glue that would act as a filler?

well i can give you a trick to try but you have to do it out side. weldon 4 is flamable!!!!! with that said. squeeze the bottle while aplying a small lighter to the needle. instant flame thrower. just make sure to remove the lighter before you stop squeezing the bottle. other wise the flame might run up the needle and into the bottle. use this at your own risk!!!!! if you blow your self up its not my fault. it will clear the needle in 2 seconds.

weldon will act as filler if you let it sit about 15 mins and let the epoxy start to harden a little. it gets real thick. but i dont recomend using it as a gap filler. try to get your parts as close to perfect as posable. if you see a little gap. say the thickness of 5 sheets of paper then it will be ok. bet any wider of a gap will cause the seam to be weak.

I figured it wouldn't be good for seams but might be OK to fill "pot holes" or chipped edges etc. I know when I use West System resin there are fillers that can be used for voids.

no you got it wrong. its great for seams. it dont fill gaps well. its like syurp. so it flows out of the gap causing a void. where weldon 16 is thicker. it will fill the gap. but the weldon 40 is alot stronger bond. i use weldon 42 which is 40 in a pre mixed gun. but i use alot of it so it pays to have the $150 gun and get 12 cartrages at a time.
