500g tank project middletown

Also I am looking to do a 5 inch sand bed. I know that everyone is looking for southdown, but does anyone know of a good source for about 1000 lbs?? I am really trying to avoit $30 a bag if possible, but want aragonite for stability in lieu of silica.

I haven't seen true southdown at HD for the past two summers. I think someone got wise to our use of it. or they just switched to a cheaper supply of silica because, after all, they sell it for kids sandboxes. but maybe there's something else.

Russ, I would raise the sumps on blocks, adjusted for the water line of each so that a simple 4 inch drain type bulkhead and PVC can be used as an overflow to the next, lower sump. cascade them and let gravity do the work. like the first one on two blocks high, the second on a one block layer, and third on the floor.

You will be using a pretty big return pump, pushing lots of high pressure water and burning lots of watts. so it looks like you need to use 1 1/2 - 2 inch pvc pipe. I might think the heavier walled schedule 80 pvc might be a good idea. or better yet, flexible spa type PVC?. larger pipe reduces the back pressure and increases the flow.

have you decided how many supply and return and closed loop bulkhead holes you will have drilled in the tank? it's a factor in the flow/head calculator to size your pipe and pump. I'm sure you have been trying lots of configurations.

Ken,
Went to HD and Lowes today byt no white sand at any of them. I found some of the Kolorscape products at lowes in meddletown, but no white sand. THe lady in lowes said to try Wally World in Dover.

The search continues.

I am planning to use the Spa PVC and have calculated head pressures. Rather than a closed loop I think I will go with Tunze streams with a controller for variable flow and the magnetic attachments.

If anyone has any leads on the Sand situation I would appreciate it.

Not much luck until spring , I'm sure. that's when they stock it for sand boxes. I did some research, and of course found the whole spectrum of opinions, and test results of the ne HD play sand, and kolorscape, sounds like the white kolorscape just might be part carbonate and part silica. some swear it fizzes in acid. thats carbonate. but who knows. some beaches on the fringe of reef zones would be mixed.

have you considered building a PLENUM sand bed in the tub instead? you cand use a mix of aragonite CC and carribe special sea floor aragonite. only needs to be 4-5 inches deep over the plenum, so you wont need as much. plenum sandbeds are a passive denitrating structure. later you could light it and grow frags on an eggcrate platform in it.

now that you got me thinking of it, i found this test report from about a year and a half ago. just started reading it, lets see how the types of sandbeds compare in a real , controlled test.

there might be a part two also.

Ken,

I actually have a plenum setup in the 55 that is upstairs, and it is working great. I finally located some Kolorscape after calling about 10 different stores. I really want the DSB for looks, filtration and a stable CA+ supply for buffering purposes. Even if the stuff is half calcium carb it is worth it to save $900 for sand.

I will set up a fuge with a plenum with a DSB in one of the 150 rubbermaids, and I like your gravity idea that makes sense with multiple "overflows". Do you know of a good source for bulkheads. I finally found some flexible SPA pvc at lowes tonight, but could not find the bulkheads for the sumps.

Thanks
RUSS

FYI MRC is sending me a new skimmer cup today. Woo hoo!

what sizes of bulkheads do you need? I might know some places.

Oh yeah, the cascading came up on the reef central DIY thread i have been playing with. the basic question "is there anyway to recapture or use the wasted energy of water going down the over flow to the sump," either below tank or in a basement sump room. in amongst the usual fluff are some more good ideas like that. check it out. i like the water wheel generator scheme. its possible.. ? but also good ideas to run skimmers off the return line, eliminating a pump in the sump. your tank will have at least 25-30 gpm feed to the tank, so thats a lot of work driving it way up to just fall to no particular use. another suggestion is raise the sumps farther off the basement floor to lower the head pressure so you can use a smaller pump. sounds good...

Read that thread:
A lot of small time bickering going on there, but they had some good ideas if you can sort through all of the hodge podge.

I Like the gravity fed staggered sump idea, but don't think I will get into running a generator off of any of the overflow water.

I think I am going to make a trip for that sand on monday, if anyone needs any let me know. I am going for about 1500 lbs, so a few more bags will not slow me down that much.

Ken,
Probably 1 1/2 or 2 in bulkheads. Also looking for a good supply for schedule 80 PVC as I did not see any at HD or LOWES.

Also you sound like you may know something about electrical configurations, so I may be picking your brain when it comes to adding a box downstairs for the tank electrical. Right now the main is in the Garage on the 1st floor.

Thanks

You can get some bulkheads at these places. if you use the spa flex PVC, you will need to install and connect it to bulkheads so that there is no torque on the bulkheads. that will stress the fitting and the tank wall. so elbows at the bends to allow straight runs rather than bending the tubing to attach. that would be bad in time. this first place has sched. 80 bulkheads. and flex pvc, sched 40.

for bigger ones for say an overflow from one 150 tub to the next you can probably use PVC tub and shower drain bulkheads from HD. I'm pretty sure I have seen sched 80 PVC at HD before. they should have it.

If anyone orders from Savko please let me know. I purchased a used tank and even though I have four different bulk head sizes I don't have the size I need. I need to find a bulk head for a 1" hole.(105003 on Savko)

Does anyone else find that no matter how many PVC fittings, bulk heads, adapters and other plumbing stuff you have, the one piece you need is never one you have? Lol

Well, andy at MRC made good on the broken skimmer cup and I got the new one in the mail yesterday. I will try and send some pictures early next week of the sump setup. I picked up 50 8x8x12 concrete blocks at HD today for the gravity fed sump system. I am making the trip for sand this weekend and picking up a couple hundred pounds of live rock at my brother-in-law's. Also picking up plumbing this weekend.

Who is your brother in law and why does he have a couple hundred pounds of live rock available! Ill need a couple hundred lbs in a few months.

Shnabbles,

He owns a fresh/saltwater/reef business in Danville, PA. If you guys are in need of "bulk" items like LR and Sand let me know and He can probably beat local prices. It may take some schedule coordination, but I can get you prices if you know what you are looking for.

Where at in Middletown? Im in Sharondale would love to stop over and see what your doin. Im in the process of reclaiming my 260 right now.
