540 build thread

Thanks! I still have the peninsula tank. It's plumbed into the same sump that the 540 is on. I was going to take down the 300 but my wife actually wanted me to keep it, but I didn't want to maintain two big separate systems. So... one big system it is!

Sadly I don't have the gigas anymore. It lived about 10 years but I think it just outgrew the ability of my system to sustain it. It got to almost 30" and would consume almost 2dkh per day of carbonates. I actually considered just getting out when I lost it.

Glad you decided to stay in the hobby. Sorry about the loss. Man way to upgrade with going crazy!

Added a couple new tangs and moved the two Aholehole over from the 300:

I've also been battling with an Apex EB8 that keeps shutting itself off and making the rest of the Apex system. Been trading emails with Neptune systems but I think the new EB8 I got is just fubar'd for some reason. Automation is great when it works! The rest of my Apex has been rock solid for 5 years until I added the second energy bar for the new tank

Just a quick update... I've been adding a few fish. Currently there are two large rabbitfish and two Aholehole from the 300, large unicorn tang, a powder blue, bariene, mustard, and purple tang, a bunch of ocellaris clowns, and a few other random fish. A local reefer was breaking down his tank so I able to buy a bunch of healthy tangs.

Anyway here are a couple newer pics:

Glad you got those tangs, they needed way more room then 80g. I have always wanted a unicorn
Thanks Anthony. The unicorn likes being able to stretch its fins! They do get big in the wild with big tail streamers. Last time I saw a big healthy unicorn in captivity was in Johns old 300 at YR

Getting some good algae growth on the ATS. That's about two weeks worth, on both sides of the mesh! Took it outside and scraped it off with a trowel

Had the first temperature test after three days in the mid to high 90s. Since the tank and sump are in the sunroom I was a bit concerned about heat, but it seems to be doing okay. As long as I can keep it under 84, I'm happy.

The pH is a little low since I've started dosing vinegar to help bring down nitrates in addition to the ATS. Tested nitrates a few days ago and was between 40-50ppm. I'd like to be under 20ppm
