55 gal v.s. 75 gal

I have a 55, and here are my main reasons for wishing I had a 75:

1- Sump space is limited. I can barely squeeze a 10 gallon tank and an 8 gallon rubbermaid under there. What's worse, is I have to daisy chain the two vessels, which is higher risk for overflow (even though I've tested power fials and have been ok). I could fit a larger sump under a 75.

2- Narrow. Aquascaping is more challenging in a 55. Most decent looking chunks of LR come almost ot the front of the glass, leaving very little open sand.

3- Capacity. The 75 is 35% larger (duh), add in the fact that you could probably fit an additional 10-15 gallons of sump capacity underneath, and it could be 50% higher capacity. This means that your salinity, temperature, and other parameters will fluctuate less. You can also fit more LR into the tank, making it easier to stock fish that hunt copepods.

I've got a 55 now and will be upgrading at the first available opportunity (ha!). My sump is 20 gal. and holds everything I need it to, so that's not the problem. As stated above, the tanks are so narrow that it's extremely difficult to aquascape.

I had a horrible time trying to make sure the rocks weren't resting on the glass and I'm sure that I've still got dead spots. I did manage to get some caves built so I could get some circulation, but I still had to go with the dreaded rock wall that I said I'd never build!

If 75 gal. is too much water for you, go for the 50 gal. wide...MUCH better than 55.

My Honest advice Buy the biggest tank you can afford up front, that way 6 months from now you dont have to upgrade cause you want a bigger fish/tank. If you can afford it i would start with a 120g or bigger, you can keep all the fish you could in a 75g plus you open the door to some really pretty bigger fish. Just IMHO. not to mention the bigger the tank the shorter the cycle and the more stable the tank will be in the long run!

+1

I started my 75 last October after the tank sitting in a corner for 5-6 years... 3 months into this and I am now I am researching a 220gal unit... go for the largest tank you can afford...

I have a blue and a yellow tang and it was just a matter of time before I needed to move them to a larger tank... that is my excuse anyway and I am sticking to it
