55 gallon for all these fishes

I would like to set up a 55 gallon holding tank for 5 months. I need to know if the amount of fish that I have will be to much for a 55 gallon. It will also have a 20 gallon sump. The fish are coming out of a 300 gallon tank.

Current fish that I have:

- Powder Blue 5-6"
- Yellow Tang 5-6"
- Sailfin Tang 5-6"
- 2 Chromis 2"
- Clown 1.5"
- 2 Madarins 1.5-2"
- Blenny 2"
- Anthia 3-3.5:
- Anthia 2"
- One more, I forget the name. 2"

It looks like a recipe for disaster to me. That heavy a bioload will turn to ammonia pretty quickly. I don't think you could do water changes fast enough to compensate for the waste which that many fish would produce in a 55 gallon tank. I think you should look into a large Rubbermaid stock tank for some of the larger fish and keep the smaller ones in the 55. If that isn't possible, I'd check with a LFS to see if they'll take the fish for a store credit and start over when the time is right.

I shudder to think of what might happen if those tangs get cabin fever...if nothing else, it may just stress them enuff for them to come down with crypto.

If you don't add the PBT and the SFT, you could likely pull it off much more easily.

What would be the minimum rubbermaid size tank I can put all these fish in? I'm tying to prevent from setting up multiple tanks.

Could you explain the circumstances? Does the 300 belong to somebody else? Why five months? What happens to give them more room at the end of five months? A Rubbermaid stock tank is no cheap option either and five months is a long time to keep all those fish alive. Please tell us more so we can advise you based on the facts.

Id say no less than 150 gallons. You talking so fish that really need room to swim and putting a bunch of them together is asking for trouble. Yo uare going to make them cramped and grumpy in a 55 gallon which will only lead to agression.

And 1 mandarin should be in a 75 gallon. So having 2, youll need a bigger one.

As other's said the three tangs would never make it for 3 months in a 55. A cramped or ****ed off powder blue could take out all those fish fast!

omg, yes. there will be some issues with all of those guys in there. some serious aggression with it that packed, I would find another tank.

Seems that the powder blue would be the problem by the responses. Try it but with the complete understanding that any issues, and you may have to remove whichever fish is a problem. That shouldn't be that hard to do. Cheers

If you had a bigger holding tank that was established and had some live rock for filtration you could do it. I had a naso tang, bristle tooth tang, a betta and a foxface in a 29 qt tank for two weeks and had no issues with ammonia, but i did have a good amount of live rock and the qt tank was established.

I got a 300 gallon rubbermaid tank. I'll put about 150 gallon in it and put all the fishes in it. The reason for the holding tank, is because my PBT has ich. I want to keep the main tank without fish for about 5 months after I do the Tank Transfer method on them. I did it a couple of months ago and had the main tank fallow for 8-9 weeks and the PBT still got ich in the main tank. Now I don't know whats wrong with it cause it is now twitching. It doesn't scratch against the rocks but it does eat a lot.
