i have created a plan for a 55 gallon stand as you can see below in the 3d image i created using google sketch-up its a great program! All of the wood is going to be solid pine or maple(or just veneered particle board).the back and top panels are not shown so you can see inside.the white pieces are 2 x 2" and the blue is 1/2" thick.

please give me some feedback on this design.:spin2:

looks greats, stands are very simple to make. Sometimes i worry w/o a center support, but on a 55g it should be fine

I built a 55 gallon stand from 2x2 also. I used 3/8 pine plywood for the outer skin. Painted and it looks pretty good. I will post the pics after work today 3/11/08

It is a 20 Gallon, but anything that is 12 inches wide would fit, including another 55 gallon tank. I would have to take the side of the cabinet off to slide the tank in. I built the stand deep enough and wide enough for this purpose. If I remove the trim, the drywall screws are exposed and if they are removed the panel can come off.

This is the same process I used on my 150 Gallon tank. This one has a metal frame. Take a look.

I did not use any software. I made sure that all supports, legs were under the horizontal box. The horizontal box is the structure that your tank sits on. 55 gallon looks just like pressthebutton's design. Leaving out the rear support is the only way I could fit the sump (refigium). After the frame is built, fit the plywood to the stand. Pretty straight forward, you can sit down with graph paper and draw a stand frame. Build then cover and trim. Most home centers have good assortments of trim. If you are interested in looking at the Refigium that I built for the 55 gallon tank, see my gallery. It is a 20 gallon glass aquarium. Oh yea, the frame under my 55g tank looked really rough. I did not take my time with it. The outer skin covers one ugly frame. It is over built and will never come apart though. This is to prove anyone can build one, heck I am just a mechanic, certainly not a carpenter. Jump in and build, you will be surprised.

This fall I am going to replace the stand on my 150g tank. I want it to be about 5 inches taller and the canopy will be about 8 inches taller. I will also build side cabinets
