I'm setting up my tank, after reading some i decided I'll drill it to avoid an overflow box for the sump. Where should I place the hole? it's a 55 gal... 48 inches long. Also, I've never had a sump...how does it work?? I understand the hole in the tank will deliver water to the sump, and I will need a pump to return the water...how is the tank's water lever kept constant and the same?

sorry, I get it now....the more water is pumped up, the more water flows down...dumb question, sorry. What diameter hole should I drill?

1st make sure the tank isn't tempered. most 55 gal tanks are and you can't drill them. what brand tank? where did you get it? as for hole size 1" bulkhead will work so you will need to find out the bulkhead size to figure out the size hole
