57 starphire rimless sps dominated build of a century!

Hey guys sorry for the lack of updates. I am currently moving some of my corals over from my old tank. I was going to do a diy led light like the one I had before. But after starting to build it, it just wasn't coming along the way I had wanted it to. I went ahead and bought 2 Ecotech Radions. They should be here Tuesday. I will update with some pictures when I them installed.

These radions are awesome! I ordered a nice looking mount for them and it should be here tomorrow. Once I get them both put on I will take some progress pictures for updates.

I took everyone's advice and removed the foam. Not easy when the heavy tank is on top if it and your by yourself haha.

I get the substrate tomorrow. I will be putting that in and maybe start my rock work not sure. I am going to Vegas so unfortunately I wont be able to do any work on it this weekend.

I know you've already removed it, but I suspect another major reason is that with only a very small percentage of your tank's surface area resting on the foam, all the pressure on the foam will be concentrated right around the trim. This will likely do 2 things:

1. it will make the foam under the trim compress more than if the weight of the tank was distributed evenly across it's surface, which could potentially bring the centre of the foam in to contact with your glass as mentioned before.

but more likely and dangerous

2. The trim might not settle on the foam uniformly. If your rock isn't evenly distributed, or there's less water in your overflow compared to the tank, etc, you might get one side of the trim sinking deeper than the other, which could add enough torque to your bottom pane of glass to potentially snap it. Or cause issues with your joints, etc.

Wicked build so far, it's going to be stellar.

Turn that mp40 up that thick sand bed is going to tornado ! I know this bc I have a Elos 70 rimless with a mp40 and it was a mess start

Nice tank danschargers :) The tank itself looks alot like the illuminata.

Snootch, what do you need to connect the switch to the lights? Is it simple? (If danschargers21 is not OK with us blabing about lights in his thread then shoot me a quick PM thanks!)

danschargers21, I hope you don't mind me answering this on your thread.

Installation of this magnetic switch is simple: just connect the negative wire of the low voltage LED power source to one terminal on one component; connect the negative wire of the LED light fixture to the other terminal. After connecting the positive wires of the LED power source and the LED light, you then attach the unwired component to the moving surface, whether a drawer or door, and attach the wired one to the fixed surface, whether a cabinet, shelf, drawer housing, or door frame.

Of course I dont mind. I actually didn't know how to do that myself. I am hoping my buddy has some time soon and I can start building the panels, but its not a priority at the moment.

Somehow my Radion rail system I ordered from reefkoi.com was missing the brackets to attach the lights to the rail (sigh), so that will have to wait. In the meantime I make-shifted something together so I could hang both lights. I don't have a laptop so to set it all up I have to lug my desktop over to the tank haha. Thats a Friday project.
The wires are still a mess still a work in progress!

Once my lights are in place I will be making an order for some more sps corals.

Be sure to make a cover screen for it, had a carpet surfer last night when I was trying to catch one of my anthias to treat it. Poor clown, damn anthia!

I want to know how those Radions do cause I would love to upgrade to them some day soon. Keep us all posted how they do with sps.

haha sorry to hear man. I really dont want to make a screen I think that takes away from the beauty of a rimless tank. I tried to get fish that weren't known has jumpers. That is why I am staying away from wrasses.

I will definitly let you see the progress of my sps. Next week I should have them in place with the rack from reefkoi and have them programmed for the day/night cycle. The tank does look bare I need to get some more sps in here asap.

Tank looks really good. I think I'm going to have to get the 80 rimless after seeing yours. How much did the steel for your stand cost?

I built the stand myself with a buddy of mine so that kept the cost down. I think the steel was around 90 dollars. The powder coating was another 90, so all in all around 200 dollars. However I have yet to build the panels so I am not sure what those will cost me yet.

Here is a photo of the reefkoi.com rail rack for the radions. I love it. Easy to remove when I need to do maintenance and lightweight and looks nice.

Here is a photo I took this morning. I got a bunch more coral from liveaquaira a few days ago. I need to get some more with my next paycheck.
