I am setting up a 575 gallon reef system and thinking about the best method to calcify the tank..ive read good and bad things about stand alone kalkwasser reactors versus calcium reactors....can anyone with a large tank advise me on their perference...also which product you are using

thanks

both, kalk stabilizes calcium and alkalinity plus the pH. since money is no object (575g) go with the best you can find. the choices depend on daily evaporation rate. open or closed top? REEF-ON!!!

The Nilsen reactor (Kalk reactor) helps to keep Ph high, while the Calcium reactor tends to lower it. You likely will not get enough calcium to meet demands with a Nilsen alone, unless you have very low demanding corals, like my system so far. I would start with the Kalk first then add the Calcium reactor when you need it. In my 450 the Nilsen is just enough to keep up with calcium demand with Live Rock growing coraline. It is a tremendous help in keeping Ph stable over night and helps the productivity of your skimmer and helps with phosphates too.

Welcome to RC, calhan.
Have you lurked on RC before posting?
What reef animals do you plan on keeping?

Wouldnt u be better of with a calcium reactor on the tank from the start, as they are not design to raise calcium level but to keep the calcium levels stable. i myself dont run one but i believed this was the idea behind one.
