58g Reef (re)Build

COMAS Rocks!
Howdy everybody!

Jess and I have decided to rejoin the reefing community once again after an extended leave from the hobby and thought we'd share our tank build with everyone. This is going to be a very slow and cheaply budgeted project but at least it'll get us participating in the hobby that we've so missed. That being said, here's what we've got going:

We'll be using our 58g setup, which currently is set with 2 x 36w T5's + led night lights, Couple of korallia power heads, an oceanic bio-ball filled sump powered off a "I have no idea" return pump. Good chance most of the equipment will be modified, updated, or outright thrown out of the setup but it's enough to get us running and cycling while we plan for the rest. I do want to retrofit a couple more bulbs (for my lovely LPS), I hate the sump setup but it's their and until we figure out something better with the lack of space, it's being put to use. Basic plan is simple enough, we want a pair of black and white ocellaris clowns again, and in all likelihood, some bangaii's again. We'll most likely keep the stocking to a bare minimum to keep water quality as optimal as possible and focus more on the inverts. I'm still in the process of rummaging through a garage full of all the leftover equipment, tanks, etc. to find useful items for this setup. Here's a pic I took after cleaning the tank up, little pre-aquascaping, filling and leak testing.

still need to toy around with aquascaping alot. We've got so much rock sitting around the garage and so many possibilities on how to decorate with it, I just picked out the biggest and most porous choice pieces we had that would fit in this tank. That's about it for the time being. We'll keep pictures up to date. Missed you all and hopefully will be able to rejoin COMAS within the next week.

Just for fun however, here's one last pic to show ya'll the hobby jess and I have been participating in for the last couple years.

and yes... he loves the fishies!!!! :bounce1:

I remember your breeding threads

and it was so much easier raising those little bangaii's than what i'm workin' with now :P I'd love to start breeding some bangaii's again and it's definatly been part of the "back in the hobby" discussions that me and the misses are having.

few changes made to the aquascaping and powerhead placement. Think I'm happy enough with it for now. Added two more koralia's (#2's maybe?) just below the ones you can see, aimed directly toward my troublesome deadspots behind everything. Tossed in some pellets today to see how the flow was and results weren't too shabby.

Only thing really grumpin' me up on the system now is moments after I got the aquascaping just right, I thought... "i want a sandbed". Which I had previously decided against but it just doesn't look right without. Oh well, I can get creative adding it around everything. Heres the pic, thoughts?

don't you just loooove hindsight?

Just finished dumping 60lbs of oolitic sand (did I spell that right?) you know, the sugar fine stuff. Now we play the waiting game before I try to get it around the rockwork properly :P

Yep its oolitic! That takes me back to my geology classes in college playing with oolitic limestone.

I couldn't remember the spelling so I googled it and came to some geological site talking about how it forms. the best was reading that the nuclei can come from "brine fecal pellets" lol. eeewwwwwwww!!!!! I rather like the variety of size chunks in the black and white caribsea stuff as I've used in the past but this stuff had a decent "affordable" price tag on it at the time. Dont' think I've ever used it in something that wasn't a DSB.

I agree, was just going bare bottom for the ease of cleaning the tank but Travis convinced me that I'd be cleaning more often that way. He's probably right as he often is. After aquascaping though, it just doesn't look right without the sandbed. With my plans of a pair of B&W ocellaris, probably some bangaii's, that automatically makes me want another jawfish as well but I really dont' want to content with that deep of a sandbed on this tank, at least not in the DT, may go remote dsb later on down the line if I make a better sump setup I like.

that sandstorm FINALLY settled down. I kept letting it settle, and then try to get the sand around the aquascaping but that only made the sandstorm come back quickly, I finally said screw it, drained everything into buckets, got the sandbed where I wanted it, which took a complete overhaul of the rockwork. I wasn't as happy with it until I looked at the previous aquascaping pictures and thought, okay, not so bad. Fish will still love it. Unfortunatly, had to move the powerheads as well due to them kickin' up sand horribly. I think it's finally "acceptable" now.

Now I get to wait for the cycle to finish, Figure out what i'm doing for a sump as i don't want to use the Oceanic wet/dry I have down their, finish getting rest of equipment I need, such as another T5 retrofit kit and upgrade my coralife skimmer to something a little better. I did find my Ph monitor and pinpoint temp monitor which was nice. i wish the pinpoint nitrate monitor had dropped more in price by now but oh well, I can do the ol' fashion nitrate tests :)

Rock work looks great!

I just finished my 20 long sump tonight now its just waiting for the silicone to cure.

well... just re-aquascaped again... for like the 5th time lol. I had it looking so freakin' sweet just a few days ago and then I realized, as good as it looked from the front of the tank, the rockwork was way to close to that front pane, cut out almost all the fishy swimming room that way. So... ugh. waiting on the sandstorm to settle yet again and I'll post a new pic of the redesigned, new and improved, hopefully this will work, aquascaping :)

i think we're going to go with a 20g L sump as well. It'll fit but we'll need to make some shelf or something to keep the electrical stuff out of the way. You got a picture/ideas for me based on the sump you just did ghellin? I was going to go just the standard 3 chamber setup, but may try to drill and have the return pump external, just not sure yet, too many options to consider lol.

Ammonia's finally gone, waiting on Nitrite to drop. Phosphates and Nitrates have been dropping nicely. Much faster than anticipated, although I did toss a filter bag with a little phosphate remover in the sump. Obviously the aquascaping changed again :P I think since it's easier to move 4 big pieces of rock, I'm more likely to swap them around than If I had used 100 smaller pieces. Hopefully this will be the last time though. It's good. Oh, and here my tanks first signs of life :P Little spot of diatoms.

I like the new aquascaping. I really like the cave on the right, your fish will love it. You have a lot of depths and room to put corals too. Keep us updated! :-D

Your rock work makes me want to redo mine. By the time I got everything moved into the new house, I was so tired and anxious to get my fish out of buckets that I basically just threw all my rock into the tank. The only thing I managed to do right was put the big ones on the bottom :) I still havent moved the sand in!
