$6,000.00 pair of Clown Fish

saw that - thought they would be more

the island they come from is a protected habitat and you can't collect them. these are tank raised from australia

Those are so cool. I think this is one of only a handful of times this species has made it to the US. They are worth every cent of it.

I don't think they are ugly but no 2 fish are worth $6000 I don't care how rare. The breeder went through alot to get them but $6000 is price gouging. Some rich pinhead will buy them though I'm sure.

agree. this is a hobby. $6000 to me is just too much for anything.

Just think rkelman, you could breed them. Charge $200 for each baby (people will pay that no problem) and you could easily make your money back ;)

Or, sell them all back to a distributor for like $50 each, and they'll take hundreds at a time off your hand.

Lol. I don't think so. With my luck they will turn on each other and they'll both be dead. Or impotent :)

I'm not saying that I would pay $6000 for the pair even if I had it, but if ever there were fish WORTH that price, it might be these. Mrblue's log (on another forum) of the effort involved is absolutely fascinating reading. I hope he is getting more than the normal % of his cut in this whole supply chain...

The market for these fish are just not that big so wholesaler will not take hundreds off of your hand at a time. Even here where most everybody is partial to clowns, the market for them is not anywhere near 100%

If they're not available very often at all, of course there won't be a market for them. If you could offer them at reasonable prices, I'll bet people would buy them.

Do you have link for that forum?

I posted the picture of them on another thread.

Who ever bought these needs to get their head checked. I would only pay maybe $50 for each fish. Latz and chrysogasters are way better looking fish.

Don't know if I am allowed to post the link or not? However, one could go to the MOFIB website under the Clownfish forums and find the thread about McCullochis started by mrblue...

For those who are bashing because of the cost, you should read the background story. In short, a guy had to petition the Australian government and basically dedicate a year of his life to get 10 specimens for breeding -- the only 10 specimens collected in recent history, and that will ever be legally collected.

Regardless of what you think of the looks or the cost, its a cool story, and while I don't personally think its worth the cost, there are some for whom it is worth it; and thank goodness for them because having those initial buyers are the only way the breeder can recoup the cost, and if there is no prospect of recouping the cost, then there is no incentive to pioneer new breeds of tank-raised fish. Think of it this way. There was a time when VCRs cost $1000, when basic plasmas tvs cost $10,000, and so on. If it weren't for the initial adopters willing to pay the premium to compensate for the R&D costs that went into these technologies, its very possible they would never have been developed in the first place. And all of us will enjoy the benefits of having another option in tank-raised fish when the costs come down. And they will likely do so within a few years, once the original stock go on to create their broodstock, and they have broodstock and so on (basic supply and demand).

Why is that? If the person is wealthy enough to afford a $6K clownfish pair than more power to them.
