$6,000.00 pair of Clown Fish

I hope whoever bought them will successfully breed them, it would be nice to have another species in the hobby

For those who are bashing because of the cost, you should read the background story. In short, a guy had to petition the Australian government and basically dedicate a year of his life to get 10 specimens for breeding -- the only 10 specimens collected in recent history, and that will ever be legally collected.

Regardless of what you think of the looks or the cost, its a cool story, and while I don't personally think its worth the cost, there are some for whom it is worth it; and thank goodness for them because having those initial buyers are the only way the breeder can recoup the cost, and if there is no prospect of recouping the cost, then there is no incentive to pioneer new breeds of tank-raised fish. Think of it this way. There was a time when VCRs cost $1000, when basic plasmas tvs cost $10,000, and so on. If it weren't for the initial adopters willing to pay the premium to compensate for the R&D costs that went into these technologies, its very possible they would never have been developed in the first place. And all of us will enjoy the benefits of having another option in tank-raised fish when the costs come down. And they will likely do so within a few years, once the original stock go on to create their broodstock, and they have broodstock and so on (basic supply and demand).

Well said.... Those types of buyers let me have a job!

***? I need to give up landscaping and start breeding these things. Too bad I can't afford them! I agree that if you can afford the finer things in life, why not??? But it would be sad if he/she (purchaser) didn't breed something so rare!

hey mcliffy in what dream did u have that vcrs costed 1000dollars and even if i was rich i wouldnt buy these fish there r so many other fish including clowns that look way better and the guy that took his time getting these fish from whereever he got them from should of left them there truthfully ive seen damsels down the road from me in a lagoon that look way better than those clowns

The only clownfish that I would spend a lot of money on is the Amphiprion fuscocaudatus. These are also only found in one place and they are soo pretty. These aren't in the trade..I wonder if they are protected as well.

I imagine there are a lot of people who would buy them if money was no object.

you're crazy fuscocaudatus is not better than this fish. it's simply a better looking clarkii. and there are found in more than one place. seychelles, aldabra, and the western indian ocean.

not saying i would pay 6k for any fish. even if i had the money to burn. but i had to disagree. there are much better looking species of anemonefish out there. here is a pic...

The person who invented VCR didnt just give away his new invention. Major companies had to buy it off him. In fact, if you look at it that way the "first" VCR probably cost millions.
EDIT: After a little research it looks like a guy who worked for Sony created the first VHS tape (betamax). That doesn't change the fact that the first few VHS/VHS technology sold was probably in the high thousands/millions.

Secondly, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Thirdly, it's not about breeding the nicest looking fish, its about advancing the hobby, adding new tank bred breeds into circulation, and self acomplishment.

Fourthly, prestige, there is prestige in owning a 6000 dollar fish and there is a lot of prestige in breeding a pair of fish that ONLY you have.
