60 Cube, custom internal overflow box?

Herbie

Yep,that one
Hey,
I am looking to install a custom overflow box into a 60 cube (24"x24"x24"). The tank is drilled on its back and already has that less than stellar marineland overflow box from the factory. I want to cut out the half-moon circular overflow and install a proper overlow box.
Who are the current companies that custom make these now?
I will prob go with a 6"x6" box that goes from the bottom to the top of the tank, the way a traditional reef-ready box would be.
Any ideas ?

Thanks,
Herbie

i realize you know a lot about overflows so i am hesitant to suggest anything, but if i were you i'd custom-make a glass-holes style thing. Or I would just use a glass holes kit if the hole you have is the right height. maybe they could custom make you one if your hole is not at the right height.

www.glass-holes.com if you are not familiar

Thanks. I have been out of it for a while and was just looking to see who might be making these now. There used to be a few companies making custom overflows, but I cant seem to find them any more.
Glass - holes has some, but I was looking for a full length overflow box. I am sure I can custom order something, but was hoping to find something in a standard off the shelf, size.
I was thinking of just making one, but my acrylic fab skills are a little lacking, lol. Anyone want to make me one :lolspin:

If nothing ^ works for your needs and you can't find it elsewhere shoot me A PM. I'd be willing to build you something to your specs for the cost of the materials and shipping - I don't normally offer but I like your drain system so much.....

Thanks, I did check BRS too. Seems like everyone I can find is manufacturing internal overflows that are the shorter style that is only in the upper part of the tank. Guess its easier to make a one size fits all type of overflow.
I am looking for a bottom to top of the tank overflow box..........classic old school overflow box, like the old Oceanic's used to have.

I have been thinking of the ideal overflow dimensions for a 24" cube tank. I am thinking of having one made that is 8" wide x 4" deep. 24" high. 3 sided. Kind of like the newer style, Oceanic Tech series overflow boxes. If I go with no teeth, like a weir style, I guess It would have to be approx 1/2 lower than the rim of the tank? say 23 - 23 1/2 " high ?
I may take you up on your offer, lol. Cant find anyone to make me what I want, and I suck at diy acrylic work. Can you do it in black, and cut teeth if needed ?

Glad you like the so called "Herbie" overflow. I really cant believe how popular it has become! :wildone:

Thanks,

Sounds like you know what you want. I'll send you a PM to follow up on if you decide to take me up on the offer for help.

Thanks,
Your stuff is top notch! The overflow pics you sent me that you made rival what the top tank manufacturers are putting out. Nice.
I Pmed you some measurements for what I am looking for.
Here is a pic. of roughly what shape overflow I am wanting to do. Its an Oceanic tech series overflow.

Thanks for your offer, I think you will be making a box for my new build !

Ironically I must ask one question, have you considered going "Bean" on the drain?

You would have the space for the extra hole in your plan anyway, so why not. :)

Any update on this?

I hope my comment in post #8 didn't come off wrong, just meant to be funny in a good way :)

No insult taken :lolspin:

I just havent finalized my ideas yet. I am still wanting to build a 24" cube but I dont like the current offerings. I did find a new Oceanic 45 tech tank on sale for a great price, but its not a true cube. But man those tanks are awesome ! Why did they ever stop building them ????:headwalls:
I need to find out if I can drill a 60 Marineland cube on the bottom pane. If I can, I may still need your services. I may even try to install a semi-circle overflow in the corner of the tank (like the corner tanks have). Have you ever done one of those ?

Herbie

Almost certain the bottom is tempered on the 60 cube. I have a 60 gallon cube as well and I wanted to drill the bottom, and that's the conclusion I came to. Mine is reef ready too and I regret not ripping out the overflow and putting in my own. I haven't had noise issues with it, but I'm less than impressed with it's surface skimming abilities.

Yea, I pretty much just confirmed that the bottom of a Marineland 60 cube IS tempered. The sides are not, go figure.
That really puts the brakes on a Marineland 60 cube. I dont want an overflow out the sides of the tank. I want it on the bottom, to get it as close to the wall as possible.

Thanks for your input.
I am not impressed with Marinelands attempt with the RR overflow in the 60 cube. What were they thinking :headwally: ???
