They are kind of expensive though locally.. like 11 or 12 bux a pop.
You need to expand your "local" a little bit ;)

Talk to the guys up at Reef Plus in North Aurora Not a million miles from Lemont. He sells them every day 3 for $25. He is usually willing to negotiate a little if you are in a buying mood.

oh FAIL. I typed up a lengthy response and got an error message

anyways. You def. need more than 4 (now 2) peps for that size tank. Mine lately have been doing really well and I can get 'em for $4/ each locally.

 I hate it when that happens. I now copy my posts to the clipboard before posting (if I remember), and if not, I try a refresh.

I had great success with my Copper band. he did eat most of my feather dusters but it was worth it. Like J says they are dumb. Mine got himself stuck in the tank and died. It really was a bummer because he would eat mysis. I want to get another 1 down the road. I have been letting the few I have grow and spread so when I get 1 he should have plenty to sustain him. My sailfin tang eat 1 of my pepermint shrimp right in front of me.

I got another one and just grow aps in my overflow. I put small rocks in there and once-in-a-while I toss one in the tank.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE WHO DOES NOT MECHANICALLY FILTER 100% OF THEIR OVERFLOW WATER!!

You should of seen him when he first went in.. size of a quarter.. My wife fell in love with him and named him. I told her as soon as you do that its a death sentence. He's still growing though :)

I buy my fish locally either at Aquatica in Tinley or up north at Living Seas in Park ridge. The hippo came from Living Seas.

I'm really excited today. My Guardian generator went in yesterday and the wiring is being finished today. We are running tests right now. This thing is a beast. Right now I have all the lights on, AC's running Home entertainment going, tank and lights full on, and its not skipping a beat.

No more worrying about power outages :)

I might have to drive to lemont to steal him! lol. Wow from Lemont to Park Ridge that seems like a hike! I like the Petland/Aquarium Adventureland in bolingbrook although they don't have a HUGE selection. There is a petland in Naperville that has a good selection.

Quick update on the tank. All is doing well :). I have the first 7 frags in from a tank that is in the process of crashing. They came to me either completely bleached out or STN. I think all (except maybe one) is going to make it. I waited until my tank was ultra stable: solid 9.3dkh and 425 Calcium for 2+ months now... ~0.01 phospate, 0.0 nitrate.

The fish list has grown:
3 Yellow Tangs
1 Hippo Tang
1 Scopas Tang
9 Blue/Green Chromis
2 False Percs (which have paired off now btw... the mal3 is defending the nest :)
1 Diamond Goby
1 Royal Gramma
1 Green Mandarin
1 Lawnmower Blenny

Inverts:
2 Emerald Crabs
1 Fire Shrimp
2 cleaner Shrimp
8 Peppermint Shrimp
1 Unknown fish-eating crab confined to the refugium - he got my six line :(
25 Reg legged Hermits
Hundreds of assorted snails :)

I'm hunting for a Copper Band thats eating and a tiger tail Cuc... Those will be my next purchases.

After that I'm thinking of adding a bunch of Anthias.

I was actually thinking of 8 or 10 females and 1 male :)

Anyone know if I should buy all females and let one turn into a male or buy a male outright?

They would make a nice addition. Nice colors and they are an active fish. I've always bought that males....

don't the males attack each other? I thought you had to have a harem with one male? I was leaning towards the bartletts. The Lyretails looks nice but the bartletts are a bit more colorful.

Bartlett's are a very good choice. I would get one male and 6+ females. The females higher up on the social ladder will get more colorful over time. It's pretty cool to watch.

In your size tank, I don't think that you would have a problem with two males.

In a tank your size, I'd get a pair of square spots, a group (7-9) of lyretails and a group (7-9) of bartletts.

That would be just sweet to sit back and watch!

Awesome build and love the tank. Wanted to say for what it's worth that I've heard Klein Butterflies are very good at getting rid of Aptasia. Actually read an article in Reef Hobbyist Magazine not too long ago...

http://www.reefhobbyistmagazine.com/archives/vol_1/issue_4/index.html

Pages 4 and 5 are on Kleins. Supposed to be easier than Copperbands, and better than Peppermint Shrimp. I think they interesting if not as pretty as the Copperband and they get along well with conspecifics.

wmilas - Pat (newschool04) has an aptasia-eating copperband that wiped out all of his aptasia (and he had a lot), and he is now looking for a new home for it. He is local here in chicago, so you might contact him.
