What's the name of the black tang with the yellow spots? I've only seen two others and I can't for the life of me remember the name. Any basic info on them? How big do they get? Are they especially hard to keep? Great looking fish!

Acanthurus maculiceps, otherwise known as the Spot Face Surgeonfish, White Freckled, Black-Eared Surgeon

This fish is beautiful in person, the pic isn't doing it justice!

Oh, I know. The one that I saw in person was AMAZING! I'm sure it'll be $$$ or get fairly large. Oh well, there's always a fish to make a new tank for :lolspin:

They are not prohibitively expensive....a little more than other tangs, but about same as purples.

Its a great fish.

Paul.

I've heard they're aggressive from a guy at my LFS. They will sell me a juvenile (still a little ugly, greyish and light yellow) for $30. He said to look out for bristle tooth tangs in general. How big do they get and if you were in my position, would you go for it? I don't think they know what they've got and I'm about to snatch it up just for that reason. Can you send me a PM, I'd like to talk more about this fish (and I don't regularly check this thread).

Not to steal anything from Paul here, but your LFS owner might be a bit misinformed.

Maculiceps are not part of the bristletooth family, they are Acanthurus (as the vast majority of Tangs are)

Bristletooths are Ctenochaetus, like Tominis, Koles, and Chevrons

+2 on not being bristle, I have one in my tank also, and I also have never seen a yellow juve, they hold their color pretty well for the most part from juve to adult, and $30 for a small one seems really cheap for that fish.

Hi All,

Back from vacation, time to catch up on threads. Ed,Jwilliams- yes you are correct. While the Macauliceps is an algae eating machine, it is not part of the bristletooth family.

Well I havent updated in a few weeks.

Over the weekend I worked on my frag systems and the filtration. The biggest diffrence is the chnage of skimmer. I just installed the MRC Pro II on my system. Its slightly thinner than the ORCA, but much taller and has a much improved aspirator assembly which creates a great deal more foam in the unit. Here is a size comparison:

So far I am pretty happy with the MRC.

I also added a new frag system to the one I have. Right now it is holding some excess rock I have, but its running pretty well under the Solaris LED unit.

In the next few weeks this tank will be filled with frags.

and then I took a few pics of my system to show you the growth of the corals:

everything is growing really well right now.
In the next few weeks I will be swapping out the TEK T5 hoods I have for a custom light rack much like the one Ed and George employ.

Regards,

Paul.

Hey Paul...Thanks for the frags. Your tanks are impressive on-line..but..to see them in-person...they are just unbelieveable. Everyone should buy SOMETHING from you just for the tour. Thanks again

Great growth since I saw it last. I noticed that the pink tail made his way back to paradise, I bet he doesn't act up again after his stint in the rock bin!

Yeah, he was blamed for the loss of the zoanthids, once i caught the crab he was set free from the sump and put back in the main tank.

I actually saw the crab tonight in my sump, has to be approaching 4 inches now and huge claws.

I like the unit itself, and the light it gives off. It has 5 panels each of which has 25 LEDs in it. Its a mix of white blue and green LEDs.

It is extremely bright, but somewhat narrow, so I hoisted it a little higher to give a good spread of light.

P.
