Once the actual doors are on, the whole front should be childproof....plus provide lots of space for my wife to store whatever she chooses.

Tim and I spent the day joining oak planks to make 16 inch wide pieces for the raised panel doors. A long day...but nice results.

Paul.

Hi Russ,

yes, there will be a "hood" with 5 door panels same as the base. The hood will be removable, in its entirety to do work on the tank.

All will be made in white oak.

Just finished the mud and tape of the sheetrock (all on my own!).

Paul.

LOL...easy....

believe me, without Tim, it wouldnt be happening. He makes it easy.

Having watched him I could probably do it, but I would take a lot of time. That wall was up in 90 mins and sheetrocked.

Everytime I work with Tim I learn more and then get to do more. Today when I got home from doing the doors, I taped and mudded the joints, not that there were many. I made a mess , made a call, did it right (or at least better)....give me a tile job any day.

I cant wait till the doors and all the custom moulding and trim is done. Hopefully....hopefully, by the time of the meeting I may have the woodwork done, but probably not stained and sealed....so no touching.,

Then its time to work on my frag tank.

Just to show I actually did something, heres the wall taped:

Task for this week is to get the cabinet base inside the frame (im using a piece of 3/4 ply as the inside base), then add a back and the sides of the inside. The actual cabinet will go half way from front to back, thats why all the plumbing is all done in the back half.

Also, if you look at the picture I posted above, I have to remove and refinish the pedestals at the bottom of the doorway. These are remnants from old wooden posts that were there and which were removed when we remodelled the living room. Once they are gone, a few tiles need to be cut and laid.

Not a lot to do in a few days I guess.

I don't envy you learning how to do mud and tape lol. I would rather haul two trucks of concrete in a wheel barrow then mud and tape and sand one joint lol. Not a good skill to tell anyone that you have lol. I can't wait to see the cabinet finished, you and Tim do awsome work.

Paul, If you want to give Tim a break, I wouldn't mind stopping by and doing the finish coats of mud and I could place the crown molding up in a way that it will look permanent and be removable without showing it was ever there when you decide to move to a house that you build around your next aquarium.

i wanna see the finished room! damn paul, ur tank is freaking insane! haha... when your done, ill nominate you for tank of the month on Reef Central!

Rawny:

Thankyou for your kind words....Im really liking the way the wall and the surrounds are coming along. I hope to have it all done by the december meeting, but thats coming up pretty fast.

It looks great when the acrylic is clean, but scraping is a task that can be left alone while I work on other prjects right now.

Paul.

So, now that you have had it up and running for a few months, not taking weight and moveability into consideration, how do you like the acrylic? Is the cleaning a major pain more then glass would be? How does the clarity compare with glass? Are you having to tiptoe around it to keep from scratching it? Just asking because i am still kicking ideas around on what to do for my new tank.

Hi Dugg.

To answer you questions.....tank has been set up now for 8 months.

I reqally like the acrylic, the clarity is outstanding. Anyone who says glass is as clear has not had acrylic. Maybe Starfire glass is a good comparison.

DOwn sice is yes it scrateches and there is a learning curve on how to keep it from scratching. It can be kept free of scratches but it takes a lot of work. I have added a couple of scratches, but they are very minor.

Would i go acrylic again? on this size, definitely.

My personal opinion, above 300g, acrylic is the way to go

It also has its advantages....I can lie on my tank and it will support me, which my glass one probably would not have done.

Today I actually got around to skinning the inside of the inside the stand with oak ply. I then replaced all broken tiles and cut new ones for places lacking tiles:

Again- I havent cleaned the tank....but heres where I am at.

Paul, The right side of the tank is bluer and the right side is brighter and whiter. What is the differences between the lighting you have used. Is there a reason for the sides being different?
