I've been reading your thread and I'm at about the time when you are venting about the VA. I had to post here. The trouble you are having with them is not even the tip of the iceberg. My mother summarizes medical histories for life insurance purposes. She is THE expert on any and all of this stuff. To all who don't know, the VA is the worst place you could possibly go for medical treatment. They are drowning in money so bad they can barely find their paperwork. The people who control and run the VA can only be described as stupid. If you are not extremely carefull they will make your problems worse at best. At worst they have killed patients through stupidity. Unfortunately this is the direction our government wishes to go with all our health care.
OK. Enough out of me. Meanwhile I keep reading and am expecting great things from you. Keep persevering and you will have a reeftank to rival the best on RC.

Here is what the stand looked like before priming and painting it with the shower liner.

This is pretty much the gold standard for wood stands. The guy who designed it for you hit the nail on the head. Everyone pay attention here..... This is how it's done.. Mine will be the same exactly.

Thanks man. The VA has been good up until about 3 years ago. I just hate it that the facility I attend is where doctors do all of or most of their residencies. It finally hit me when I was in the ER a couple days after the first surgery and this female doctor comes in, introduces herself, saw my surgery, and then let me know that she never seen anything like that and she needed to get her supervisor because she was a podiatrist resident. And I was like really, you are the ER doc on call and you are a podiatrist. Total loss of respect.

Thanks again Dan. I don't know if it is the gold standard for stands. I just built the stand to calculator. The pieces between the 2x10s were added so they didn't twist.

This is the exact design suggested on a youtube channel.:eek1: DIYJoey. It's widely known and used. The only difference is that on a tank this big he would use 4x4's on the inside of the outer corners. It's kind of like an elevated floor section. Only highly over-engineered. The only thing that would make it stronger is steel joist hangers for the 2x10's:lolspin:

P.S. Even foot Docs have to go through basic if you know what I mean....

Ahhh I remember that YouTube video now. The leg design where the outer legs support the top section was in his video. All the 4x4s I was thinking of using was treated and I was told that it wouldn't be good around salt water.

Well other than her beauty she missed a course or just survived it.

Yeah I'm not sure why pressure treated lumber is bad in this instance. I know it gave me a headache [DUH] when I burned the lumber from our old pier a few years back. Can anyone elaborate as to why we don't want pressure treated lumber? I'm just unfamiliar.

Probably the first thing that runs through my little mind is the potential for leaching toxins into your system. The chemicals used to pressure-treat lumber are mostly cyanide-based. They are intended to kill or inhibit molds, fungi, bacteria and insects, i.e. invertebrates. Sound like anything you recognize in a reef tank?

Old, pressure treated wood used to be made with arsenic but that isn't the case nowadays. Modern pressure treated wood is a better material for creating an aquarium stand than untreated wood but powder coated steel is a better material yet. Its all a matter of cost and all three materials are commonly used.

Well I know it's been a while but not a lot has been happening. The Moorish Idol is still a pig in the QT. I transferred the six Longspine Cardinalfish (Zoramia leptacantha) to the main DT.

I believe my system has reached ULNS as my nitrates and phosphates have been 0 ppms for the past 2-3 weeks. I have been feeding the fish 3 times a day during this period as I like to keep some nitrates (2-5 ppms) to aid in controlling phosphates. I have also started adding more KZ products to help what corals I have in the DT and frag tank.

The frag tank is getting full with more corals. After adding some suggested KZ product I have seen color flourishing and more polyp extent ion. My tri color acropora is slowly coming back too. Also the diatoms and crazy algae is finally going away.

I will probably post a video of the tanks once everyone gets settled. Everyone meaning corals and fish.

Thanks dc. The videos didn't come out like I want so I will try again when everything is open.

On another note while I was adding more items to the bridal registry I saw the perfect welcome mat for my fish room. Since I changed the original plan for the tank, I now have to walk around the side of my house to get to the fish room.

New Video of the Frag Tank

Here is an update to the frag tank. Compared to the other video you can see that the diatoms are about 90% gone. I also added the frags from the DT because it has better lighting. The new additions are;

Blue Candy Canes
Kryptonite Candy Canes
Rainbow Millipora
Miami Vice Chalice
Unknown Chalice
Pink Gonipora
Pink Ding Dang Palys
Blue Rhino Palys
Utter Chaos Palys
Yellow Acropora
