600 Gallon Upgrade Build

Hi Wayne. I'm new to RC and just caught your thread. AWESOME tank and system you have going. I'm be tagging along with you.

I am also doing a new acrylic build (96X24X30h) with external overflow(s) as you have on your tank. My question is (sorry, i could not find this info in the thread- maybe I'm just missing it?) what type of overflow system are you going to use? I'm guessing you are going with twin durso's in each box or maybe a "Herbie" in each one?
I ask because I am having a hard time deciding between changing to one big overflow (California style) with a "Beananimal" in it or to try 2 "Herbies " (one in each box). My original plan was to use 2 1.5" Durso's in each box. My return pump will be approximately 1500gph with Durso's and more if I go with a siphon system. I'm curious to see what type and why you went with the drain system you choose.

Thanks for sharing your build and keep up the good work!

SORRY, I found your drain system page (my bad)

Did you have a chance to play with the drains while doing your freshwater fill? Seems like most people do not recommend 2 herbies on a system.

Hello and thank you for reading my build. As for my overflows I went with a modified bean herbie,,,, kinda. I have one drain in each overflow and an emergency. It runs pretty quiet and I was impressed. At full strength the overflows can handle about 6000 GPH. But now since I checked the returns down I am averaging about half that now.

Since your tank is tall I would do one external bean animal with 1.5" drains.

Yes I did and the valves are set for quiet sound. It took a couple days to fine tune the drains.

Why would the extra 6" make a difference between your system?

They are scheduled (actually behind) to start my build any day so I have to get off the fence soon and decide what I'm going to do. I'm 75% Bean now, but next hour who knows.

Wayne, Are you going to run your emergency drains dry or trickle some water down them?

BTW, thats one bada$$ skimmer you have! I have a case of Skimmer Envy.

I added about 200 pounds of sand today. I rinsed each bag two times before I added to the tank.
This is the sand I used

Lesson learned, don't add 200 pounds of sand to a tank with 15 inches of water. Because after the first 40 pounds was added I couldn't see anything. I had to feel my way to adding sand.

So all said and done I got my 1"-1 1/2" sand bed thickness I wanted. The tank finally cleared. Sorry for the dirty FTS.

I still have to add the rest of the water to get it running.

Better get adding that water!!!!!! Tip: if you're pouring water into the tank, use one of the empty sand bags to pour the water onto, this saves stirring up the sand again.
