600 Gallons System - i2ik's Journal

Wow :eek2:

I just took a quick photo spin through your thread. Amazing setup i2ik. I'm going to have to give it a closer look when time permits. Lots of stuff I want to read more about. For now, subscribed and paying attention!

Thank You Mike. I lot happened and i still have to recovered from it, the reason why i have not much been updating my thread here...

A few months ago, i introduced a few fishes in my tank without QT them, ending up having velvet disease in the tank. Lost a few fishes but managed to save a couple of them. I lost my Regal angel, Watanabei Angel, Goldflake angel, Achilles Tang and a few more...

It was a big down for me, i ended up not to quit and make an QT tank.

Then later, i had a lot more corals, so my demand in calcium was higher... installed my calcium reactor but could not get it to stabilized. My alk was really high and i was afraid of getting some STN or RTN... Purchased a peristaltic pump a few days before going traveling for 2 months... I thought i could fix the problem with the peristaltic pump, i calibrated the flow and the Co2, but in the end, ended up having lots of swing with the alk and lost a lots of corals. Get really depressed but knew that someday, my passion could come back up. The fishes was still doing well and eating well so it gave me some hope.

After visiting a friend of mine, i saw how his tank changed since 4 months and it gave me back some hope to my tank. So i decided to sell my Ca reactor, pH controller and solenoid to buy everything new. Got an GEO 818 Ca reactor, a new pH controller and a Reef Fanatic Co2 Regulator. Everything should be installed this week, only waiting for the regulator to get shipped.

Ouch. That's rough. Those were some very nice fish.

Tanks can rebound very quickly. I hope your troubles are behind you! Best of luck!

Thanks Ed, i will try to put some pictures soon...
I have changed my aquascape a few months ago and noticed i havent show it yet

Some updated pictures of my tank. Unfortunately, i have no pictures of the tank when it had more corals in it.. :(

Those are actually taken today :P I lost lots of SPS since my Ca reactor went nut and my alk got unstable giving my corals RTN and STN while i was traveling...

I will post some more fish pics

Also my naso is having a skin disease i think, i cant ID the problem and find a solution to solve it... i thought it was some scratch when i bought him home, but there is more and more... He is eating very well, all kind of food..

Went to the airport this morning to bring back this well packed box :)

The box contained a pair of Declivis Butterflies! They are in the QT tank right now, eating very well frozen food and flakes!

Great updates Richard...

Oooh.....LOVE your butterflies....let us know how it does in a reef as I might just consider adding them into my list :)

How's the parrotfish behaving?? Sorry about your Naso. Have not seen anything like this?? Maybe post int he Fish Disease section and see what they have to say??

Hey Richard. Please explain, what happened to your reactor, you have the jet stream from schuran right? I have the same and Im wondering what could possibly go wrong? I hope this never happens to me...

Also am very curious about the parrotfish - if there is one fish that is not reef-safe it would be the parrotfish. Have you found out some secret to keeping them in a reef?

Thanks Ed: They are in a QT tank right now, there are some SPS frags in there to see if they will do considerable damage on them. Up to now, everything is going fine. I will keep them in there for maybe 2-3 weeks, trying different coral before putting them in the tank.

Good Idea in the disease forum, he still eat agressively, i hope he will be ok!

Green Thumb: The Schuran reactor did not work out for me, it was always unstable. I had it feed by my return pump and try to adjust the outlet but it was never constant, either it get stuck or no constant flow, making my parameters unstable. I thought by adding a peristaltic pump, it would solve the problem, it was a bit better but would get blocked after a a week... maybe i could have done something if i would be there, unfortunately, i was gone for 2 months this summer and it was just not reliable. I know that Invincible569 had very good result with that Ca reactor, i did not have the same result. the GEO 818 is more a peace of mind, easy to adjust and pretty stable up to now

Mcliffy2 & Ed: The parrotfish is doing very well, eating everything and not touching any corals. Its a quoyi parrotfish, being told to be the only reef safe parrotfish. I read in a couple of European website people saying them to be safe, so i gave it a try and it never touch any corals. Grazing on the rocks for algea, and to also shortening his teeth. He is doing a pretty good job in eating algea of the rocks, just like a rabbitfish or a foxface would do. No secret in keeping a parotfish in a tank. I think that all of the parrotfish except for this quoyi can't be keep in a reef.

You learn something new everyday in this hobby. :) I'm going to read up on them, might have to try one myself - I've always love parrotfish in the wild, but given the fact they make white sand beaches out of corals, I'd ruled them out...

Give it a try :) I was just like you before getting the parrotfish... i always wanted one, saw one in the LFS and the guy told me it was reef safe, did not believe him, did some research and ended up trying him :)
