OK....now im jealous.

If I could keep that many odd shaped rubbermaids insulated I would adopt that idea Shawn.

I have had to wrap mine in insulating padding to keep the temp stabilized now its winter.

P.

What kind of insulating padding did you use ?? How much of a temp swing were you seeing until the insulation was installed ??

Will stacking all the rubbermaids like that cause any issues? I know they're strong for holding water, but don't know if the 100 is meant to hold an additional possible 500lbs on it's sides as well (the weight of a fully loaded 50 gal?).

You haven't been around to see. This is what my bright white reeferrocks looks like after a few months :)

What up RokleM, your tank is looking awesome... I will have to try to get over in person and see it :)

I have 2x 150 and 2x 50s... For the 2x50s I figured they would be about 350lbs each... The 150s tanks seems to be pretty sturdy and I don't forsee a problem, but I would like more input...

Can you think of anything that would keep the same layout that I have now but add reinforcement ??

Put some bricks in the 150 at the center of the 50?

A couple pieces of 4" PVC cut to be snug might also work.

I like that idea.

I've followed this thread since near inception and have to say it's been the single most helpful thread I've read. It's demonstrated what a huge undertaking a large tank is and how easy it is to underestimate time as a factor in the project budget. Certainly has forced me to rethink the timing of launching a bigger tank (as I and so many would like to do some day) and how much commitment I can put into the effort. Hang in there Shawn.

jnarowe, thanks for the reply... I will have to keep that in mind...

I like this idea as well... If I cut them snug then the walls as well at the PVC would support the wt...

tylorarm, I am glad this has been a helpful thread for you, that is one of the reason I wanted to start it while the project was underway so that I could post the good, bad and ugly so that anyone who was thinking about doing something similar would hopfully not have as many bad, and uglys as I have :) Also please keep in mind that I had alot on my plate the last 6 months (family issues) and the project would have been prob been completed by now or at least alot further along...

I was being silly, it looks like a Chilian terrace farm crashed into a science lab.

To clarify: that is a compliment!

I used the flexible batting stuff, basically fiberglass inside a long polythene tube that is paced between wall studs.

I was seeing a big drop of a few degrees ovening, even with my heaters on....now after wrapping the 100g rubbermaid and my 75g refugium and 50g skimmer barrel the temp holds pretty stable.....even tho the weather is now cooler.

Well went to the store today and after spending another $75.00 I got 20' of 4" PVC pipe along with some flanges...

I plan on using the flanges at the top and bottom of the 4" PVC tubes...

I am also going to try to get the salt mixed in very soon as well, I have the heaters in the tank and its around 75deg right now... I have my controller set to 77deg...

That should work nicely.

Thanks for the idea Norm... I was not planning on the flanges but when I got there and started looking around I came across them and I figured it would only help :)

just a little reminderZ: If you don't cap the pipes, things will find their way in and colonize...

I was thinking about that... Does anyone see a big issue with having them open ??
