6055 Won't work...I have a couple of questions.. suggestions?

Hello,

I bought a used 6055.

I didn't have a cable for it to connect it to the multicontroller 7095 until today, so the last couple of days it was just plugged into power. It was running constantly... is that a bad thing? So this morning I noticed the pump was working any longer so I bought a cable to connect it to the controller.

It won't do anything now. Any suggestions? Should I pull it apart to check something?

Also I have a question about the power supply. What voltage should it be set to? 12v?

Thank you.

When you had the 6055 connected to just the power it was basically running at whatever the max power you had dialed in on the white dial on the small box at the end of the cord. You can adjust the voltage to get the flow to where you want it at and then use the white dial to fine tune it. You can really vary the amount of flow between the two.

Running constantly isnt a problem, these pumps are made to run either way. Download the manual from tunze's website and take the pump apart and give everything a good cleaning, making sure all the parts in the diagram are present and accounted for. If a bit of crap got stuck in there and caused the pump to overheat it would automatically shut its self down to keep from burning out. Take it to bits and give it all a really good cleaning and once over and try again.

They will run fine without a controller. My guess is that the pump had some dried salt or calcium and this increased the wattage draw and burned out the power supply. It is very important to thoroughly clean a pump before storing it or leaving it dry for this reason. The minerals in the saltwater crust up and jam parts and while it ma start it needs more power as a result and burns out the power supply. Can you give me more details, does the controller or power supply light up? The voltage is just a speed setting, the higher the voltage, the more flow, so any voltage is fine.

Thanks for the reply. I see thanks for clarifying the voltage.

Yes both the controller and power supply light up.

I swapped one of the other pumps to that particular port on the multicontroller and it worked fine (alternated flow pattern).

Should I take it out and give it a good cleaning?

Do you recommend a vinegar soak with these just as I do with other aquarium equipment?

Open the pump, take the propeller/magnet assembly out, if you have to pull hard, stop and soak it overnight in vinegar and try again, I think the pump is just jammed.

I gave it a good soak. Cleaned it up. It came on for a few intervals but it was clicking each time the propeller started. Stopped working a short time later. Any other suggestions?

At this point it is probably best to send it in.
