6060 placement suggestions

I just bought a used 65g reef ready tank and the setup came with a tunze 6060. looking for suggestions on placement because it seems this will be a powerful unit for a tank this size.

The return is 3/4" from the corner overflow and return pump is a Mag 7. So the return will be putting out from the top-left-rear of the tank. I was thinking of making a sloping reef rockpile (to hide the overflow) at the left rear corner tapering to bare sand, then another small rock pile at he right side. Also I will be using a DSB with fine particles.

I would like to keep equipment relatively hidden. Looking for suggestions on placement, flow rate and the possibility of timing the unit for pulsing. Or any other pointers or suggestions on setup to disburs flow and not blow my sand bed all over. Was initially thinking of burying it midway up the larger rock pile and just leaving the discharge port open, directed to the right front corner of the tank.

Whether or not it will be too much flow will largely depend on what you keep. If you are doing SPS or leathers it will be fine.

You cannot turn the pump off and on any more than once per hour or you can damage the drive unit. I would run it on all day and than maybe off at night with a maxijet or something else on the otherside taking over to prevent a night pH drop problem- mainly agitate the surface.

Don't bury the pump in the rock, it will need cleaning every few months. I would place it in the corner opposite the overflow in the back aimed across to the opposite front corner, this iwll give the flow the maximum distance to spread out.

Upper corner is best but about 3" below the surface to the top of the pump- otherwise you get vortexes pulling air into the out flow.

great...thanks for the quick reply

I was thinking the same thing. It may be a little much for frogspawn, xenia, anemones, and other inverts/corals with flowing appendages. Would you agree?

I have no first hand experience with the 6060. With a 6000 at full power at the opposite corner in a friends 58 (same footprint) a hammer coral seems to do just fine. You will just have to try it and with the diffuse flow of the Stream rockwork is a major part of how well it works.
