675 gallon glass display / 1,100 + gallon system in LA

It is a flat run that has to come up and over the sump, so there is a chance for possible air bubbles...we built in some venting outside of the fish room to try to prevent air pockets! Hopefully it works out...here is a pic of the air vents.

Ahh...yes, I see. I would think the air vents would make a big difference. Keep the updates and pics coming!

sweet tank... love the size and the aquascape is awesome. why do you have all the powerheads on one side though?? those MP60s will probably have more then enough flow for that side

Freeze protection?

Freeze protection in LA? NO, you need heat protection, lol. Even if it does get cold enough, the constant water movement wouldn't allow the pipes to freeze.

Great build George! Great attention to detail!

Yes heat protection but freeze protection as well, dont be naive kust because its LA, thats a big problem, easily avoided for those fluke days that occur over the years...

I'm not being naive, I'm just stating the facts. There is no way his pipes would freeze living in LA. It gets no where near freezing here in S.Cali. Even if it does get that low, the water in the pipes would have to be standing still for it to freeze. His pipes will have constant water movement from the drains to the returns which is also moving 78-82 degree water.

Even the Jacuzzi at the cabin in the mountains I used to rent wouldn't freeze over the winter and it's much colder up there than LA. All they did was run the Jacuzzi all winter.

I completely agree.

True enough but just think of the extra electric you are wasting when heat escapes.

I don't think that short bit of exposed pipes running from the wall to the ground would make much of a difference. I think where insulation would play the biggest role would be the pipes that were buried and running along side his house.

I am not sure if the pipes being buried at the depth they are would take into account geothermal warming and cooling also.

Depends how cold it is, you'd be surprised how quickly heat would escape, don't see why you wouldn't insulate when it would cost next to nothing to do and could save money in the long run.

Given the minimal costs vs investment, I would. Call it peace of mind if you want. All it takes is on crappy bad day, even if abnormal, like snow in the desert or Hawaii (which both have happened). Judging by the photos, this is a long term project and as such I prefer to err on the side of caution, perhaps thats being over cautious in your mind and thats fine again Im weighing the cost of the added protection. If my point is not taken by the OP, that is fine too. Im simply pointing out a consideration that may have been an oversight due to the typical climate there, meaning he probably already thought about the heat but maybe not the coldness. Less than 50 bucks vs the cost of livestock.... no brainer for me.

Starting to get the canopy ready, we are gonna have it connected to a motorized winch in the attic to have the height be adjustable. Still fussing with the details.

Also the cabinetry started coming together around the base and a side cabinet to add storage and hide the electronics and pipes.

Cabinets look terrific! Seems that the winch doesn't have to work for too long... I only see a small amount of cable available. The pic is likely deceiving though. How much can the hood move up/down?

Good observation, we are reworking the cables for that exact reason...can't wait until we figure it out and start seeing some lights on the tank.

Can't you just reduce the slack on the cables to be taut instead of giving it enough slack to form a triangle? I figure this would give you enough winch cable to lift the light higher.
