the cross sectional area is 1/2 pi r squared.

What? I thought that area was pi x r(sq). What is 1/2 pi r (sq)?

OK Carl, posting here so I can keep in the loop, if you know what I mean. Corals are yours when you are ready for them, but they are already coming out of the water, so hurry up!

i think the surge tank is a great idea. maybe just split one of the closed loops to supply the surge as well as the intank loop.
For my closed loop (dart w/ocean motion) i put the plumbing above the tank, and really wish i had drilled instead. really feels crowded in the canopy, but my tanks not nearly that big (120g) so may not be an issue for you.

When I looked into a surge tank my research found they where too loud for a home. If you found a quiet method I would love to hear about it.

Maybe instead of a surge tank up above, you could do the refugium there so it could drop down undisturbed and empty pods into the tank?

thanks, keep the input coming.

the surge idea i like but worry about the noise and salt creep of all those popping bubbles. one of our club members has a 30 gallon on his 450 gallon tank and it is cool but does produce a lot of bubbles. he has it on a separate pump and does not run it all the time.

i do have a closet beside the tank that continues onto the second floor where i have waterproofed the closet in anticipation of putting some kind of tank there. surge, or refusium.

how about a tank that is surge but only drains 1/2 way leaving the refuium behind? maybe a slow filling surge. i think i have room for a 75 gallon tank there.

the closed loop returns from the sump i hope to put under the rim of the tank. the tank is drilled with small periodic holes to accommodate zip ties to hold the pipe against the top of the tank.

i also have penductors to go onto these retruns. not sure if i will like the look of a bunch of them in the top of the water though.

i need to get some pictures of the gross mat that is now covering the sand bed.

there are now hundreds of mysis in the tank. two Diadema urchins and one lawnmore Blenny.

also a few corals that i could not pass up at the recent Marine Aquarium Expo. i guess the new tank is now my QT tank.

Skip the surge Carl. Unless it's firing continuously, it doesn't really add to your flow and can only cause issues with overflow levels, supplying equipment etc. I have looked into these quite a bit, and while they sound "cool" my observation is that they don't lend a lot of value to a captive reef.

that seemed to be Anthony Calfo's thinking too. they do seem cool but i think maybe just a refusium in my closet above the tank. or maybe that will be too much trouble and i do have the whole garage my wife has generously given up that i can use for my fish equipment room, with several hundred gallons to use as a refusium. there is the pump question but even if some of the critters get chopped up does it really matter as it will be eaten right away anyway.

i have a couple of ideas for an algae culturing station built into the system that i am still working on.

funny thing is I have never heard of a "refusium" until your posts, but I see it on google a lot! I have always called it a refugium. Oh well, anyway there has been considerable thought bropught forward that the animals grown in a refugium are really too small to be killed in appreciable numbers by the average pump.

Mine is mounted above my tank and gravity feeds into the display, but that is not necessary IMO and in fact makes maintaining it much more difficult. As far as culturing agla to lower nutrients, you would need a truly massive one to make any real impact on your reef, but using it as a predator-free zone for growing pods etc. is a good idea in my mind. I actually stock mine with black mollies as well, and some times rear and dose brine shrimp into it.

the g and the s are so close on the keyboard aren't they? of course you are sooo right. spelling was never a strong suit of mine. i am very thankful for spell checkers.

growing up in the era before computers i always had a dictionary nearby when reading or writing.
