Are those most recent picks after cleaning your screens? If so, I doubt you'll have any problems with regrowing the turf. I sometimes have much left on parts of my screen but they fill in without trouble within a couple weeks.

that is the before picture. i scraped them and it was pretty darn clean. just a bit left in the holes.

FUN!

it is about 50,000 san Franciscan's running and mostly walking across the city, a little over 8 miles. some of them naked, or wearing body paint or other costumes. it's san Francisco. the most liberal city in the world. (i am sure that is debatable)

Carl, I'm glad I'm way over here in Texas. I don't want to be watching you walk naked.

Have fun.

Lol i did a google search for "Bay to Breakers walk" and clicked on the 3rd link from the bottom...Its a craigslist ad and is interesting to say the least.

not me. those days are behind me now. although i will have fun.

not like some people
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bay_to_Breakers

just a party weekend.

Karm- Marc didn't get any good photos. he spent too much time in bed with the redhead and the brunette and the Crown Royal. oh and working his booth.

now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

The Steinhart is still new but should still be amazing. the Waikiki Aquarium was one of the inspirations for my system. Charles Delbeek who was at Waikiki is now at the Steinhart. he is one of the Coauthors of The Reef Aquarium series. one of the very best Reefers books there is.

haven't they closed all of your schools for some virus? that sounds like a lot more fun than naked people, NOT.

i read your thread and the guy on marinedepot about turf scrubbers. your build is great. your house, dog, wife, daughter ect. ect. is great, what a life, sweet. 1 question, since you used chemiacls to lower po4, how are you going to know if turf scrubbers are working?

Hey Carl. :)

...just wanted to thank you once again for the wonderful tour of your absolutely STUNNING home yesterday. That is by far the most badass house I've seen as far as the dedication and detail regarding the reef tank and pond. Truly breathtaking.

Thanks also for helping me out with the tank (and everything else), with any luck we can get everything plumbed this week and have our set-up up and running next weekend. Then we'd love to have you over to check it out and comment/advise.

Just for giggles, here's a shot of the back yard:

thank you very much.

we love the house and all. unfortunately i am 57 and have a new 30 year mortgage. i can't afford to retire ever as long as i live here. so at some point my goal is to sell the house, buy a smaller house that i can remodel to make as nice as this one, and have no debt.

smaller house, BIGGER TANK!

i don't need five bedrooms and guest casita out back, and library/den.

the roofing business sucks right now and it isn't going to be raining here for another 7 months.

all my crew is on unemployment but i am the boss and don't get unemployment, and i still have $4,000 a month in overhead on the business.

but to answer your question about the ATS. i measure PO4 regularly and when it quits rising i will know i can taper off.

Nitrates have never been a problem.

over the last few days i have modified the ATS to also be a second surge. i took the Mag 24 out of the overflow and plumbed the surge tanks to a Hammerhead in the garage. it is so much quieter now. the Mag pump is very noisy. and having the pump in the garage removed from the living room is good too. only when they both fire at the same time is there the sucking sound of the drains. time for another Melev silencer on the other three overflow pipes. i think i need small pipe though to not restrict the flow. can't risk having an overflow.

no photos yet. it is cool to watch the fish line up in the surge and the Naso tang especially go to the top of the tank as the water level rises to pick algae off the pipework that is now underwater for a few seconds.

the fish are going to be in better shape exercising against the flow.

speaking of fish- what does a Six Line Wrasse eat?

i have had mine for about 5 years. it is fat and active. it is always zooming around in the rockwork but i never see it stop to eat or eat when i feed the tank.

plumbing always takes longer than i think it will.

interesting fence you have.

where is the koi pond going?

i look forward to seeing it all in person.

i see a salt bucket. what is it covering?

I wonder if you could sand one of the screens that would allow the "roots" to hang on and allow regrowth easier? The wheel on my scrubber is made of a PVC like material, and they roughed up the surface slightly. I almost always have a slight algae film on most of the surface I harvest from when done.

BTW, if you grow any algae you on the ATS you can assume you are removing some PO4, regardless of other binders used.

when i was in Hawaii last december and snorkeling the place where we got into the water had rocks that were just out of the water but got wet with every incoming wave.

it was covered with a dense algae. i have no idea how fast it grows.

i may have to further rough up the acrylic or in some way make a better surface for the algae to stick to. i did sand the surface and drill holes in it. if it is anything like the tank any little scratch will grow algae first. so i know there is a residual algae there even if it looks all gone.

it just went online yesterday . we shall see.

Koi pond goes here in the corner with the big boulder as the waterfall...bad pic but you can see what I'm talking about:

Salt buckets are covering the footings for the palapa, so the kids don't kill themselves lol.

I can't wait for you to come see it (and the plans), just let me get the reef tank in first.

...it doesn't hold a candle to your house of course; that is beyond belief. :bum:

here is the new combo ATS and surge. it is surging about 60 gallons in 30 seconds. so the ATS part is out of the water for part of the cycle. the water fills right to the white pvc pipe before firing.

DSC09870.jpg

the video shows both firing sequentially. when they fire at the same time about 100 to 110 gallons hits the tank in 30 seconds. it is noisy with the slurping of the water down the pipes. i need to connect another Melev silencer in the external overflow.

is this too much flow for an Acan? it seems more expended that usual in the high flow, except when the surge is hitting it.

who ever said cyano will disappear in a high flow area? they were wrong. it is not the flow, at least in my tank. time will get rid of it as it goes thru the cycles.

i hope/think i am getting near done and can just let stuff grow and do maintenance on the tank. and sit back and enjoy it. sure there is some more aquascaping.

i want to get some more rubble into the bottom surge tank. maybe some that is in and out of the water. what kind of crabs could i have there? hmmm...
