7096 stopped working

Good morning Roger. Is there a way to do a reset on the 7096? Last night I downloaded the august update to my computer and while sending an updated program to my 7096, the unit froze. Now it gets no power from the pump's power supply and the computer does not see it. The pumps work fine if just connected to the power supplies, but once connected to the controller they stop and the controller does not light up.

I don't have an explanation or fix for that, typically if it froze it would still light up, it just can't accept updates. Please send it in, so long as it didn't get wet we would replace it.

Hey Roger, just wanted To see that you got the controller, should have shown up today. Have a great weekend, pls let me know when you send out a replacement, I started stocking my new tank with some corals..

jscarlata, I hope you don't mind my posting in this thread since we both have the same issue.

Roger, based on what you told the OP I sent my unit out to you today. I've tried repeatedly to get it to work and it just seems dead. I'm worried that this will also happen to a new unit if I try to update the firmware.

Ed, this can only happen if the cable came loose or something went wrong during the firmware update. It is the same sort of scenario that occurs if you are updating your modem or computer and it is interrupted, you end up without any valid firmware. Send it in, if you will be at MACNA, I can probably help you out their if you stay through Sunday and bring it with, let me know as I will only have a few display items.

Jscarlata, I sent a replacement controller on Friday. You should have it by Thursday, it does still have the old firmware, since I use a Mac, I don't have access to a new version yet.

Thanks very much roger, no worries, my laptop still has the new stuff extracted so i'll re-install!

Ed, no problem about jumping in...FWIW, i didnt have any problem installing the new software, my issue occurred sneding a new program to the controller after the upgrade was done...i.e i was trying to setup a random flow program and the unit went dead midway thru...
maybe this is the same thing, i'm not sure.

Hi guys,
I had this same problem with mine over here in Oz,
All you need to do is load the avrootloader program, found in c:/tunze/multicontroller 7096.
Then choose connect to device. Once connected chose the drop down box beside flash and choose tunze 7096.acy
Then down the bottom left hit program.
You should get a flash succesful message
Start up your 7096 program from the desktop shortcut, you will see a black box appear and then all done fixed.

I too had the exact same issue as the OP ... I basically "bricked" my 7096.

After following Aaron's instructions all is well and I am back to a fully functioning updated 7096 ... Thanks Aaron.

Seems to be a common issue.

Thank you! Yes, I can confirm that this works, I was told it was only possible with a special terminal to connect to the board, but it seems the USB connection will work as well.

I think this is what is wrong with mine. The rootloader window with an error message was the last thing I saw before it died. Note: it wasn't the same error message shown in the other thread ("7096 upgrading problem").

Got a successful reset here, too.

I had some difficulty in getting the "Program" button to become active on the avrootloader, but was able to fix this by reinstalling the Tunze folder from the website, and searching for the new file. I haven't worked with Windows for years (I'm a Mac guy) so there may have been some operator error involved.

Many thanks to aaron.miller for posting this procedure!

this seem to be a general problem when using the new update.
This thread should become a sticky maybe
Can any of the admin help in this as I just had the same problems and know many more local reefers here in Thailand using Tunze had the same problems.
Tunze should be made aware of this and remove the update from their website.

Every computer at the factory runs Windows 7, so it is tested and for sure works on Windows 7, please see my other post. The most common issue is disconnecting before the update is complete, which locks up the 7096 completely as it has no valid firmware, but this is not unusual, you can lock up a laptop if you lose power or interrupt installation during a firmware update. I think since your still works, it is simply a matter of removing other connected devices or reassigning it to a lower COM port number.
