75 gal upgrade

You can buy sheets of aluminum at Lowes and Home Depot. If not available in your area, you may try a sheet metal retailer. You may be able to convince them to give you some scraps big enough.

Nice work so far.

Maybe consider buying a 48" reflector, they're not real expensive and function real well. Look on ebay or the RC Seller's Forum.

good idea... the lowes I went to only had small sheets which were too thick. I have another lowes and 2 home depots to go check out in town hopefully they will have some. Also my uncle builds boats so I should probably call him and see if he knows where to get aluminum that thin. Im guessing 1/64"? Not really sure.

well lights are in and redid my return plumbing to make everything fit right.

i plan on doing about a 3" sand bed so I am going to have to be able to clean it. What is the best way to do that?

your going to wish you would have went bigger i know i do.

Do you mean bigger tank? I already thought about it but decide to wait till I graduate school and build a house... then it gets it own room and wall dedicated to it... maybe a 220gal. By the way, you have the exact setup I am going to have... 75 gal reef and a 55 gal planted.

Just another question... I am going to be putting saltwater in next week and I plan to let it cycle for a few weeks before I put everything from my 55 in the new tank. A friend of mine says he has some "frozen bacteria" he couldn't remember the name of the stuff at his shop which will cycle it more quickly. Has anyone heard about this or used it or does anyone have any ideas on how deep I should make the sandbed. I hear some say deep others say thin. I was thinking about 2.5" in the tanks and adding another sump (maybe a 10 gal tank) with some sand. Any suggestions?

I have about 2 to 2.5" in my 75 display. I think a reef needs a sand to look good. I also have about 2.5 in my fuge section of my sump.

I used live rock and seeded with live sand to cycle both of my tanks and it has seemed to do fine.

I use 2.5 to 3 inches of sand in my 58 and will add the same to the sump I am planning now. Regarding the frozen bacteria. Not sure about that. I have used Bio Spira, but with that you must have some bio load in your tank. Not sure what your friend has. BTW, very nice stand and canopy.

thanks for the ideas about the sand... i think I am going to put about 2" in the tank and I would like to do a fuge with a little more but I am not really sure how to set it up. Any ides?

If you ever store water in a trash can, make sure the can is "cured." I just poisoned an entire 75 gallon reef because the ro water absorbed the chemicals out of the new plastic can.

NO way? Sorry Jon. How do you Cure a can?

Rgasco, regarding the Fuge. Your sump setup is nice. Not sure how to incorporate a Fuge. Other than a HOB fuge. You may be able to simply route a bit of flow into a 10 gallon tank with dividers and a compartment for a return pump. Not certain though. I am going with a Drain-Skimmer/Return/Fuge setup. Where water will drain from the Displlay into the skimmer compartment then 3-way partition divides the skimmer portoin from the return area. The Fuge has a branch off the return line with low flow and an overflow back into the return area. Simple. I hope:)

how do you cure a trash can... I really would like to know this because this is something I was planning on setting up next week. Do you think it will be a problem if I set it up outside under the overhang of the house?

MyMonkey- I was thinking of dividing a 10 gal tank in 2 and putting sand on one side and a return pump on the other side... all of this connected to the sump I have now via bulkhead. What do you think.

Almost any connection will work . It depends on how you are going to feed water to the fuge(s).

I'd think you will want the fuge to gravity flow into the sump. Any tube/pipe connected to both vessels with the bulkhead for the fuge above the bulk head for the sump so that the water line in the fuge is always higher would accomplish that. Or the bulkhead on the fuge could just overflow thru a pipe to the sump.

Just be sure there is still room in your sump to hold all draining water during a shut down.

The flow in my fuge is the slowest moving water in my system, so I like my fuge to pour into my sump before the bubble trap to the return pump. It makes for good aeration.

thanks for the ideas on the fuge... it will probably be awhile before I can set that up. I still need to set up the r/o unit which is comming in friday and get some saltwater in the tank.

You can use the 10 gallon as a fuge later. Should be a good size fuge actually. Just make sure the flow is not too great.

Yea I am still not relly sure on how to set it up but I can figure that out later. I plan on reworking the plumbing in the future and that is when I will do it.

For now I need to figure out how and where I am going to set up the r/o unit. My brother thinks he is a rock star so teh shed is full of band equipment so that is out so I got push outside. The only other option is the laundry room but that is most likely out the question so outside under the roof overhang is the most likely where I will be. I already have a little are set up by our pool pump that will workout. Does anyone see a problem w/ it being outside. I know that the r/o units work better in certain temps but in Louisiana it gets pretty hot so I will just have to put up with the slower output of clean water
I guess after all this rambling I am trying to see if anyone sees a problem with it being outside and has any problems with water storage in a new trashcan.

Thanks for the help...hopefully it wont be to much longer for the livestock... i know my clowns are ready :):fish1:
