75 gallon reef build

Gluing it isnt going to work. stick a toothpick through the stalk a little above the base (high enough so you dont rip through and split the stalk) and then glue the toothpick to the rock. the coral will attach itself to the rock over the next few days and then you can pull the toothpick out. youtube fragging colt coral or xenia...

Cool... thanks for the advice!!

Can't glue softies! Use a rubberband lovely or sureties loosely to hold him. He will fuse onto the rock himself. The glue causes them to mucus around the base and it will just slip away. I used to use a pvc fitting around the base of the softie. It is deep enough he wont fly out and he will fuse to the pvc or a rock under pvc.

Thanks Mike! Much easier than the toothpick method. And I have LOTS of pvc :)

How is your threadfin doing? I would like to see some pics of him as your tank matures. What was the other Tang? I dont know that fish. I loved the Tupperware refugium.

He's doing well... Haven't seen him nibble on any corals lately. The tangs I have are a smaller Blue Hippo, and a medium Powder Brown. The Tupperware fuge was okay, but it kept floating around in the sump, and I knew that I wanted to add more macro than I had, so I opted for something a little more free flowing.

Quick update...

So I noticed the other day that my Powder Brown has a bit of ich, so I picked up this little guy today in an effort to fix it while its not too bad. He looks a lot better today, but the shrimp won't hurt anyways.

Other than that, not too much new with the tank. For some reason my skimmer seems to be over acting though... not really sure why. The girlfriend was over this past weekend with her fancy camera and took a few shots of the tank. Here's a little montage...

Lastly, today while driving today to a job site, I learned that while you're climbing a snow covered mountain road, YOU DON'T EFFING DARE STOP! lol

Happy Reefing!

I stopped by Something Fishy this past Friday to pick up a few frags and other supplies. I got some good finds!... BUT I got home to see on their Facebook that they were having a buy one get one free on frags the following weekend. BUMMER! Oh well... Lol.

I picked up a decent Galaxea and Christmas Favia, both sized very nicely too :)

I'm still having trouble with my Powder Brown. I've deduced that he does not have ich, but some sort of internal parasite. He isn't eating much, if at all, and he is breathing very heavily. The spots on his body are bigger than ich, and seem to be protuding from a "cyst" of sorts. Pretty sad :(

Pretty corals! Sounds like the tang is in a bad way, especially if the breathing is so labored. He could very well have ich as well as the other ailment, as ich doesn't always present on the exterior and can be harbored in the gills.

If you are willing to make the effort, you might be able to save the fish with treatment in a hospital tank. Post for some advice in the fish disease forum, and read up on disease symptoms.

Unfortunately, tangs are a real gamble regarding parasites, and a QT will offer a much easier way to treat and save fish before they get in your DT. Your other fish are pretty likely to be exposed to whatever your PBT has.

That said, I'm sorry you are experiencing these troubles. I have, as well. I now QT.

Thanks for the advice! Sadly though, I woke up to find him dead... I was pretty shocked, I thought he would be able to pull through. On the other hand, I am happy to see him not suffering anymore.

Thanks again for your advice, and I'll definitely be looking into some sort of hospital tank. Heck, I still have all my 56g equipment laying around.

I'm sorry to hear that! :(

It will be fun to see how your galaxy coral progresses. Eventually it should put out some good sweepers!

It's okay. It's rough, and was a tough lesson to learn, but I NEED to look into a QT soon. This situation could have been avoided entirely.

Yes, I'm very excited to see how both the galaxea and favia take off! I've already seen the galaxea throw off its feelers a bit, but not too their full potential, I'm sure.

QT tanks can be modified you know. I have used rubbermaid bins as qt or hospital tanks. I hope the next addition will go smoother. Sorry

How's the butterly with the corals?

Well he WAS doing okay with them, he started bothering the Favia... A lot. To the point where it was pretty much just a skeleton. Needless to say, I had to take it out today... :( He doesn't bother anything else though... the Lobo once in a great while, but nothing else... for now!

So I put the new skimmer in about a month ago, and it has been doing a great job, except for the fact that a few times now, it has over acted and will fill the collection cup (rather fast I might add) with clean water even when the gate valve is wide open. The first time it happened it wasn't too big of a deal, although I did have tolet it run with the drain plug on the collection cup off for a few days until it cleared up. However, yesterday it was a much bigger deal since it dumped almost a full collection cup of skimmate right back in the tank before I had a chance to empty it.

Does anybody else have this problem as well? If so, how do I fix it?

How is your air vent situated? Is it possible its getting clogged/blocked/pinched? If all of a sudden your bubbles stop the water level will rise..

It was easy as running water through the air line for a few minutes. Probably just some salt creep or something in the venturi. All better :)

So it happene. I saw a Powder Blue that I couldn't pass up at a LFS. He looked very healthy and I asked to see him eat... I've never seen a PBT eat the way he did (the manager on duty also gave me a sweet deal). So I decided to bring him home.

Well, he was eating while being acclimated, started grazing as soon as he entered the tank, and then gobbled up some bring and seaweed and was looking for more. This afternoon I got home and threw some pellets in the tank, and he ate them too! I'm very happy with this fish, and have a large amount of faith in him :) Okay now for pictures!

Just put in the tank...

Of course the Hippo had to get some attention and get in the way...

New friends!

Checking out the seaweed (which was consumed very shortly afterwards)...

cheers

Thank you very much! I've had the Hippo for a little over a year now, he's definitely been the star of the tank, but I think he's definitely got some competition (for both food and attention) now! Like I said I've never seen a tang, let alone a Powder Blue, eat the way he is eating in the first hour or so of having him. I couldn't be happier with him!
