75 Gallon SPS Dominate tank.

For filtration i am going to put about 40-60 pounds of LR in the sump and i have a protein skimmer. I have a phohphate removal reactor and i have a bag or carbon. I also have a a chiller hooked up because SPS=sustainability promotes success. I am ordered one of these http://www.marinedepot.com/ViaAqua_...aters-ViaAqua-VA1155-FIHTTH-VA1161-vi.htmlfor heating and i have another one if i need more i have just a lower wattage on that one. Also why will the rock be smelly when i cycle it?

I run that same heater in my 75. Make sure to either secure the dial once you get it set or put the control somewhere you can't accidentally bump it:o

Ok so all my toys came about a week ago. I am getting it all set up and i am setting the tank up this weekend. Every thing works so far except the 2 maxi jets. I put them in tonight and they keep making this stupid rattling noise like the fan is scratching against the side. Has any one ever had this trouble with them and if so how do you fix it? Its really annoying!

Ya i dont really want to go get another 250 watt MH because i was told to get that for my 40 gallon and i did and it was a bummer because i could only leave the light on not that long or it would burn the corals. So i was thinking of instead of have a lot of lights for a short period of time have an small amount of lights but leave them on longer. If that would work and would my lighting choice i have right now work?

As for flow would it be good i got he mp 10 and kept the korali 4 in there also?

I have a 250 over my 40 gallon and the corals love it so far, its my avatar. Switched from 2 150s. Sorry off topic. On the MJs take them off the glass and point it up, tap it basically the impellers are stuck. If they are modded MJs them just put your finger in and give the impeller a spin, mine does that when I start it up after cleaning. You will be fine to run the 2 250s for 6-8 hours a day and the PCs 8-10 hours. Mount them about 10 inches above the tank.

First of all don't use the white propeller everyone has problems with those.
once youve switched to the black then take the fixture in your hand and turn the housing a little, unplug it and plug it back in keep doing that until it starts and runs quiet, youneed to find the sweet spot.
Its a little easier to fill the sink and do it in there.

Well i almost have every thing set up in the tank. i am starting to build the hood today and i added some live rock. My chemicals are a little high i am just wondering when i could add a fish or 2. My nitrates are around 80. Out of all the chemicals which one has to be nice and low to add a fish?

Just did a water change and checked all me chemicals.

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 40 ppm
Ph: 8.4
Salinity: 1.023(going to bring it up to 1.026)
Calcium: 450 ppm
Mag: 1450 ppm(is that good?)
Phosphate: 0-.03 ppm

With those numbers can i add any fish?

those numbers look fine but I would still want to lower those nitrates to 5ppm or lower if your gonna be keeping SPS. but they are all fine for adding fish.

I am just wondering how come you have so high of nitrates without haveing fish to begin with.

Ya I am for sure going to lower the nitrates before i even think of adding any sps. I think i have nitrates because i was a cephalopod tank and i pretty much took every thing out except the sand and water. I have a dsb and i stirred it all up and stuff because i want to pretty much start new.

So i have added 4 fish and about 30 pounds of LR. Every thing is looking good. i am going to start building the hood this week. I need some help with this whole calium and chemical thing. People say they dose every other day and stuff. Does that mean i will have to be adding calcium every day and stuff? I am confused help?

adding cal. alk. and mag. will all depend on what your uptake is. you will learn that from testing because every tank is diff.

I don't dose two part so I can't speak to much to that my calcium reactor takes care of that (They are not as complex as you tthink)' but at this point you should probably focus on maintaining alkalinity which has a tendancy to swing in new tanks and nutrients which will flutuate until the tank matures and your stocking(of fish) is long finnished.Hopefully someone with more experience w/2 part dosing will chime in but I suspect you could put the 2 part dosing on the shelf for a while until your tank settles down and you start stocking with stonie corals. For now you could just maintain alk with something like Seachem reef builder.

Ok so i all my chems are in order. Is mag look good?(numbers on page 2) Some people say that they dose every other day and stuff. Does that mean the coral is really using that much calcium and other stuff?

1450 mag is ok as long as you are using an ionically balanced mag suppliment. the reason I like to keep it high is it will help keep bryopsis in check which if gets a foothold can quickly overgrow a tank and can be extremely hard to get rid of, try not to let it get above 1500 though at higher levels it can be tough on snails.
Yes, in a fully stocked tank corals can cal alk and mag fairly quickly, but its more likely that thier dosing a small amount often to maintain stabillity.

I just got very worried. I think i saw an aefw on one of my rocks in the 40 gallon! It was long white and skinny. My camera is not working but can some one post a pic of one and what the eggs look like?!

aefw are oval shaped, flat and opaqe almost translucent, thats probably just a penut worm or something harmless but a pic would help.

Ok so i got every thing moved over to the 75 all the fish and every thing. I built a nice DIY hood(took for ever to find the matching stain). I have the 2 MHs in there and i also put the 2 65 PCs in there but i forgot to check the bulbs before i put them in and they were dead. So i am wondering what kind of bulb should i get for the 2 of them since i already have the 2 MHs? I will post pics later.

I'm going through that stain crap with the trim in my finnished basement. It's driving me crazy. The bulb combo is purely up to you. I've tried many, Actinic w/blue, Actinic w/white, Actinic alone, Actinic w/blue and white. Just make sure you include some actinic. I really liked the actinic w/blue until I was coming home late one night and the blinds were open. From the road it looked like I was throwing a rave or doing some wierd science experiment.

I need some major help here. I have lost 3 fish in the last 48 hours and one MIA right now. All my parameters are in check. The only one that is high is my nitrate which is 40(and i am not putting a coral in until its at zero). One thing that i could think and if it is even possible is that we put the hood on when you could still smell the fumes from the stain. I dont know if that could be it? I did acclimate them but i could of done a better job of that. So please help before i have to go restock and spend all my money i have been saving for coral on fish.!!!!!!!!!!! ASAP.

How long have you had the tank running before adding the fish?? My guess you be from the high nitrates. The fish most likely came from a low nitrate system and the stress of the change if done to quickly my have done them in. You need to acclimate anything you put in slowly. I would get those nitrates down to 5 ppm or less. Have you thought of adding a fuge to you sump if you have not already?
