750g show tank (L shape)

It sounds like a great idea and I'm going to try it on my next tank to build large caves for my angel fish and tangs.

Quoted from the thread:
The owner explained to me how he made them.
1) The pvc racks were constructed.
2) Styrofoam in a can was sprayed onto the racks. I didn't ask what "styrofoam in a can" was but I think it was that stuff you use for sealing windows and doors.
3) Fiberglass was placed on top of the foam. I asked what the purpose of this was and he said it helps the stuff in step 4 stick.
4)Rubble from sand was literally thrown at the foam to cover it.

The finished result is a pvc rack that looks exactly like live rock.

Here is where they start talking about it

And here is where the owner describes it:

I guess they float because of the styrofoam, for a glass tank you could silicone them down. Also use pvc flanges to distribute the weight on the bottom of the tank.

I would recommend that thread for anyone, it has lots of great information.

Sorry to hijack. If anyone has more questions, I will open a new thread.

Hi Marie, I love your tank, it is beautiful and you all have done an outstanding job with amazing attention to detail!

I am sorry to say, though, that although very beautiful, I do not believe your black tang is a Z. rostratum. I think it is a Z. scopas/rostratum hybrid.

You can see the lines and patterns in your pictures, especially this one:

but also in the other picture too

Z. rostratum doesn't have those lines, but will usually have a (more apparent with age) grey/pale blue line between their dorsal fin and body. Some hybrid black/scopas are darker in color, and I really think that is what you have. It is a beautiful fish, though!

well.. he's a tang... and he's black... so it's a black tang hahaha

no really, I look at him after reading your post and you may be right, I see a blue line on the back but it may only be a light effect... I'm not sure, so it may be a scopas hybrid

but I don't really care, it's a gift from one good friend and I really like him even if he happen to not be "the real thing" lol

Actually, it being a hybrid between the Scopas and Rostratum, it might be worth more than a "regular" black tang.

No matter its worth, the important thing is that you like the fish.

How's the ritteri anemone doing?

^market on scopas/rostratum hybrids is usually ~2/3 the cost of a rostratum. I totally agree, it is more important that you like your fish.

That being said, some of them (like yours, Marie) are absolutely stunning and rival or beat out either of the parents :) Plus, with this one having sentimental value, it makes it that much more special! :)

I've never seen a scopas/rostratum hybrid for sale. I was basing my statement on the higher cost of hybrid tangs, (A.leucosternon x A.nigricans), hybrid angels, (numerous) and hybrid butterflies (Tinkerii varients mostly) all going for much more than either of the parents seperately.

I'd be interested in seeing a listing for a hybrid Scopas/Rostratum to compare if you've got a link to one.

Awesome video and basement reno.

Well done. Looks very warm and comfy...Id spend hours just watching all the movement along the reef on the couch. Im envious.

I don't have a lot of time with the boxing day going on at the store but just want to share a couple pictures :)

Marie,

Beautiful setup!

Two questions for you:

1) I noticed your sump is about 75% full when running. In the event of a power outage or you simply need to turn off your DT pump(s), do you have enough capacity to hangle the water draining out?

2) Humidity is my biggest concern when it comes to a large tank. You use a dehumidifier, but is there any issue with humidity creeping into your walls / ceiling? Did you seal them up with any type of vapor barrier or is the dehumidifier sufficient?

Thanks!
Patrick

thank you :)

1 - yes when there's a power outage, the sump have enough capacity to handle the water

2 - we don't use the dehumidifier anymore... it was making the room too hot :( (we have it for sell if someone is interested :) )
instead we use a heat recovery ventilator, but we installed a blower to boost the air output, so the humidity is acceptable
