75G tall enough for reidi seahorses?

Im about to setup a 75gallon standard 48x20x18 tank up and wondering if 3 or 4 reidi seahorses and a few pipefish would be happy housed in that size tank?

Also, do they stress out with bright lighting?? Ill be using a 48" Tek Light: 8-54W T5 HO fixture.

sounds good, 432 watts is enough, horses/pipes don't like bright lights, so you are good, also what kind and how many pipes

use caution in mixing the seahorses and pipefish.
most pipefish are wild caught and hopefully the seahorses will be captive bred. the wild caught pipes can/will be carriers of bacterias and pathogens that cabtive bred specimens have never been exposed to. I'm not saying it can be done, just that their is a huge risk involved to the well being of your seahorses.

and theres no evidence that says that they are hurt by lights. Think about where they live: shallow lagoons. They'll hide if they don't have lots of hiding spots. make sense? if your willing, you can make a seagrass tank with a 4"-6" deep sand bed, and plant manatee, shoal, star grasses...

but, it kinda sounds like your planning on a reef tank? make sure the tankmates are ok!!!!

Thanks for the info guys.

Yeah its gunna be a reef. I already know what corals are bad for the seahorses so im good on that part. Only other fish other then seahorses and pipefish im gunna get is 1 mandarin goby, and thats like 6-8 months down the road once I get a good population of pods.

I was just worried about the tanks height of 18 inches cuz I know they like to swim vertically.

I would like to get quiet a different kinds of inverts though. Im not to sure what inverts are safe. Maybe I can list a few id like to get and if theres a no no in there, you guys can let me know. Sexy shrimp/coco worms/fromia starfish/cleaner shrimp/fire shrimp/randals pistol shrimp/pom pom crab/blue leg hermit crabs/various snails/clams (unless its common that a clam will shut on a seahorse)/harlequin shrimp. Those are some id like off the top of my head, so just let me know whats NOT okay.

no clams... I'm sure you've seen the threads. seahorses can and will try to hitch onto them

and instead of blue legged hermits, get either more snails, or smaller crabs.

oh, and crabs are no-nos cause they can grab ahold of the horse tails.

didn't know that it was only 18", but it SHOULD be ok... if you don't have a sandbed in there.

They will be fine in a tank of that volume. While they do like vertical height for the courtship ritual, they will make do with what is available.

What kind of corals are you planning on keeping? One of the issues I found with corals is that you need to stay away form ones that require a lot of flow, such as SPS.

Pods are like sunflower seeds to seahorses. I'm not sure any tank will have enough pods to sustain a dragonette, after housing a seahorse for over an hour or so...

Just an opinion...

If I were you, i would assemble your rocks and powerheads so that there is a small area w/ higher flow (enough for SPS), and then the rest of the tank be sort of slack water.... The seahorses do not mind very strong water currents, as long as they have some where to retreat to that has slower water flow. This would allow you to keep SPS, and other corals that require high water flows without harming your horses at all. I have a 29 gallon tank where one half is high flow, and the other is slackwater. My horses seem to have fun getting whirled about, and then retreating to the safety of a hitching post.

IME I have kept a dragonett and a seahorse together for a few years. The dragonet eats only pods. I do have a refugium. It can be done.

Ill be keeping all sorts of colorful Zoo's/Acans/MAYBE Some SPS(monti caps/efflo's)/Yuma's/ Gorgonian's(atleast ill make a attempt keeping them). Those are some things id like to keep off the top of my head.

I understand that seahorses would not like 35-40x/gallon turn over rates so I will have only a few areas in the tank with high flow and the rest medium to low flow.

The mandarin was just a idea, so im not to worried about that choice yet, wouldnt be for awhile.

I dunno bout the acans being sh safe...

otherwise, just try to figure out ways to keep the flow from injuring the horses by making them go against rocks when they try to hitch on the sps.

Thanks for the help guys but i decided to just go with a 90 gallon full blown reef and pick up another 30-40g tall tank for seahorse/pipefish only tank. I really dont think seahorses would have been happy with the kind of reef tank I want :) .

Sounds cool :)

I think thats probably the best thing, b/c it gets tricky geting coral and fish that you want, and then havng sh, thats why im seting up a 30 cube. :)

Good decision because the deltec skimmer and the vortech pump would have been overkill for a seahorse tank both practically and monetarily :) I didn't think the vortechs were out yet and you would have had a major flow nightmare with the combination you were wanting... dialing the vortech way down for the SHs but you would have needed the high flow for the SPS. Anyway, good decision on two tanks.
