785 Gallon Glass Reef Build in CT

You would have to remove most of the rockwork to give it swimming room. Lots of info available on keeping them. Make your mind up: reef or ray.

I've had 2 Cortez rays in a 300dd for 2 years now with no issues. Constantly swimming, lots to look at. I have far less room on the bottom than you do.

There is plenty of swimming room. The footprint of my tank is 40 square feet. Rock covers less than 1/2 of it. I would probably need to add another 60-100 lbs of sand though. I am leaning towards not adding it because of the increase in bio load and the potential to lose crabs and my only cleaner shrimp but every time I see it at LFS I want it. Haha

The addiction got me yesterday at the lfs. Every Reefer has had the experience 'I need that in my tank' even when reason tells you to walk away.

I traded five red bubble tip anemones and three large flags of green nepthea for the Cortez Ray. Considering last count I had 35 rbta and a forest and green nepthea I think it was a pretty good addition.

The ray ate a large silverside about an hour after I introduced him last night. He has been digging in the sand and roaming the tank all morning. None of the fish seem bothered by him which is good. He did have a standoff with a large Sally Lightfoot crab though. Haha

Man that thing is awesome. Bet he steals the show. I wish so bad you were closer so I could see it in person. My tank is the same size, and what you have is what I pictured, but seems will never attain. Your tank filled up so fast and looks great.

But aren't you nervous at all about not quarantining the ray? I don't know much about them at all...so maybe you just don't need to do that.
Just wondering because of what I'm going thru with my tank. Saw you didn't quarantine it and am sitting here like..."how come I'm so careful with quarantining everything, still end up with ich, have to spend every waking moment trying to catch the fish, holding the stupid fishing line connected to the fish traps, yelling at anyone who enters the room, shuvving the dog out of the way because she wags her tail and it hits the wall below the tank and scares everything, getting up in the middle of the night to try to snag them in their sleep, and this guy doesn't and has no problems at all." I am baffled and extremely jealous right now. How do you do it man??

I didn't quarantine the ray. My QT tank has copper. Also I don't think sharks and rays are susceptible to the same diseases as fish. Sorry to hear about your troubles with ich. My experience with ich makes me think that it exists in most/all tanks but the fishes immune systems are healthy and can fend off the parasite. When a new fish is introduced it is stressed and the ich can over power the fishes immune system and reproduce. Then the other fish become more likely to get it. Usually healthy fish will recover in a few days/weeks and build up immunity to it. Weak fish may die from it. For me QT is more to prevent introducing velvet, flukes and other parasites and diseases.

Hey guys, I just moved to CT from CA. Trying to find some good stores. I live in the Vernon area. Any recommendations? Love the build!
Thanks! I don't know of any stores in the Hartford area. Bob at Exotic Fish and Coral in Milford is great but that might be an hour drive for you. Also House of Fins and Greenwich Aquaria in Greenwich and Westport aquarium in Westport but they are even farther.

Dussumieri tang started picking at the ray's tail so unfortunately I had to take the Cortez Ray out of my tank and return it to LFS
