Ok i am aware of the low survival rate of clown tangs so if i get one it will be from liveaquaria's divers den section.

tank is a FOWLR 7ft x 2ft x 2ft

current tank inhabitants

~6-7 inch clown triggerfish
~ 5-6 inch asfur angel
~4-5 inch maroon clownfish(can be moved to another tank)
~9-10 inch sailfin tang (can be moved to another tank)
~3-4 inch powder brown tang (will be moved to another tank)

fish from other tank to be moved to this tank
~8-9 inch lunnar wrasse
~3-4 inch niger triggerfish

Possible fish to purchase for this tank

Queen angelfish(size unknown)

would this tank set up be ok for a clown tang tank size wise and tank mate wise??

any input welcome

Always wanted to try a/ Clown Tang, only thing holding me back is 1, i have a Sohal Tang, and 2, i hear they're extremely hard to keep. What makes them so hard to keep in comparison to the Sohal? He eats like an animal, and grows like one too. My friend just lost his 2nd clown tang w/ pristine water, it ate at the LFS and in the tank also. Wierd fish

I have one and it has been with me since Sept 5th of last year. Eats like a pig on pellets. I've traded in 2 of them before when about 3-4" due to aggression....they all ate 1mm pellets. The current one eats the 3mm size. I don't think they are that hard as long as you can get them to eat New Life Spectrum pellets.

I just tried a clown tang for the first time in my 20+ years in the hobby. It didn't even last a week. It ate at the lfs & in my dt very aggressively. It did eat the nls pellets also. I found it dead on the 6th day. I'm thinking maybe cyanide poisoning?? I only paid $18.00 for it so the the loss wasn't that bad.

Both the clown tangs I've kept were the last fish to show signs of ich, but would scratch.

Died after a FW bath, I was too dumb to slowly acclimate it back to regular salinity

I am tempted to get another and try and raise it and sell it to someone that is looking for one....

I want a sohal, but might end up with a clown tang since they are a quarter of the price!

I have one thats 6 yrs old in a 180 . I have him one year. He is a bit nuts at times but very nice active fish.

I like the looks of the clown tang better than the sohal. But they are harder to keep. I bought a small one over a year ago. I ordered it online and came in much smaller than I thought, maybe 1.25-1.50", it was eaten by something. Never seen it after day 2.

I've gotta bump this because it doesn't really seem like his question was answered yet.

I'm curious too b/c I'd like one of these guys in the future.

Would his 7 foot tank be big enough for the clown tang?

For life I would have to say no. If you don't plan to upgrade, then plan to give the fish a bigger home in its lifetime. Sohals and clown tangs are very similar in terms of requirements, the sohals being more bulletproof though. I was leaning towards the clown, the colors are gorgeous and the price fits the budget, but I don't want to take a chance in getting one that will end up dying on me. Sohals are pretty much bullet proof and plan to add one last into my 210g. I will be upgrading to a bigger tank though, hopefully a 400g (96x36x27) but I fear that won't be enough for a full grown adult clown or sohal tang.

I have a clown full grown in my 180 see my post above. He looks happy to me. But I am sure an 8 foot tank is better I only have 120 lbs of rock its all down the middle

Agreed with DPS. To directly answer you question, yes, I'd think it would be fine for a bit, but ultimately too small in the long run.

Honestly, I don't even like the way goodwin7's Clown passes the glass, in his 10', 600gal tank.... (check out his thread/webcam in Large Tanks, topic)

Agreed with DPS and AquaKnight. In the short term maybe, but eventually an adult is going to need a 10ft+ tank. They get huge and are truly active swimmers. Sohals and clowns need their space.

Got a pic of it? You say it is full grown? How big?

Hey speaking of low survival rates, I am picking up if all goes as planned a powder blue tang that has been in a tank for at least 4 months and eats pellets......sweet!
