82 degrees

Something strange has happened. I changed my rock structure and added a protein skimmer. I am now noticing that the temp is running at 82 even though it is set at 78. Before it was right on the money with an occasional bump up to 80 that drops back down to 78 fairly quickly. I am running a 150w Cobalt NeoTherm in a 29gal biocube.

We have vary little temperature fluctuation this time of year where I live and the house temp hasn't budged from 75 degrees in weeks. It is very well insulated. I did not run the lights at all today (or the last couple of days for that matter). When I got home from work the temp is just sitting there at 82.

I am wondering if the skimmer is restricting the flow a little and if that might be causing the change but the tank is running 7 degrees warmer than the house without the aquarium lights even on. And the tank does not receive light from outside.

I am sooo confused.

I am also wondering if any of you might know if a temp of 82 would be a problem for a reef set up where I plan to have a few fish (clowns, goby, maybe a dart) a few shrimp and corals.

Take out your skimmer and see if your tank returns to normal. If so then there's your problem. It may be the pump adding too much heat.

Just encountered this problem on a larger scale (90 gallon). My return pump powerheads and skimmer are throwing a lot of watts into the tank. My heaters don't turn on anymore. I have 81.5* as the tanks set temp now :(
However. That temp is fine for a reef.

In tank pumps definitely add heat to the tank ;)

As for 82, that's fine. Water temps in the tropics runs in the mid 80's for a good bit of the year. In tanks, however, I find it's best not to let it go over 86, and set chiller to keep it down to 84...leaves a little fudge factor.

Very good to hear. I was starting to think I was going to have to get a chiller. I don't think my better half would want to see it sitting there on the floor and there is no way I could fit one under the tank.

My tank was also at 83° with no problems. Until I came home from vacation and the house AC had gone out and the tank was then up to 93°. Major losses. Now have a chiller as insurance.

As a side note to add the ° symbol ... On PCs - hold down the Alt key and on the numeric keypad on the right of the keyboard, type 0176, or Alt+ 248 When you release the Alt Key, a ° should be there.
On Macs - option shift 8.

I have a Mac. We don't have A.C. so 83˚ is ambient temp in the summer. N|Hopefully it will be cooler in the fall.

I just figured out it's alt "k" and it makes ˚

˚˚˚˚ that... is awesome.

It is good to hear, from several people, that running a little over 78˚ isn't necessarily the end of the world requiring the purchase of a chiller that will cause an unhappy wife :bounce3:

BTW, when I got home from work today the temp was back at 78˚. I guess there is a fairly good likely hood that it was the skimmer.
